SPOKANE, Wash. – The Gonzaga women's basketball team opened the season with a convincing 80-54 win over Long Beach State.
Four Zags scored in double-digits as
Yvonne Ejim led the way with a double double, scoring 22 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. Brynna Maxwell was the next leading scorer with 14 points and six rebounds of her own.
Kayleigh Truong and
Kaylynne Truong both scored 13 points and also both dished out six assists a piece.
In the opening quarter, the Zags went on a 16-2 run over a four-minute timeframe to make it 23-10 early on. Ejim led the way with 10 points and three rebounds.
After ten minutes of play, the Bulldogs led 28-16 on a 62.5 shooting percentage. Four different Zags made a shot from beyond the arc as the team shot at 50 percent from the three. The team also outrebounded the Beach, 9-2, and grabbed six steals.
The Bulldogs kept up the pace in the second quarter as they went on an 8-0 scoring streak over the course of two minutes.
Kaylynne Truong led the way with five points, with a bucket coming from beyond the arc. GU also outrebounded the Beach 8-4 and forced eight turnovers.
Going into the locker rooms at halftime, Gonzaga led 42-30. Ejim led the team with 12 points and four rebounds, while both Truongs scored eight a piece. The Bulldogs recorded 12 steals and dominated the boards at 16-6. Both teams were shooting at 100 percent from the charity stripe as Gonzaga made eight and LBSU made four.
In the third quarter, Ejim continued to lead the Zags with another eight points and three rebounds. Defensively, GU held LBSU to a 25 percent shooting performance and forced another three turnovers.
Gonzaga went into the final quarter up, 54-41, and Maxwell took over for the Zags by scoring nine points to add to GU's 26 total points in the final quarter. The Zags shot at a 61.5 percent and held the Beach to only 30.8 percent in the final minutes.
Overall, the Zags outrebounded LBSU 38-21 and grabbed 15 steals. The Bulldogs scored 34 points from inside the paint and scored 22 off turnovers. From beyond the arc, GU scored 10 three pointers and shot at 43 percent from the three-point line.
Records: As this is the first matchup in program history for these two teams, the Zags now hold a 1-0 record over the Beach and start out the season 1-0. This is also the first game for LBSU as they fall to 0-1.
