Casey Legumina Makes Minnesota Twins' 40-Man Roster

Fourth Zag arm on a 2023 MLB roster

Former Gonzaga Baseball standout pitcher Casey Legumina has been named to the Minnesota Twins' 40-man roster ahead of the 2023 season, the organization announced, making him the fourth Zag pitcher currently on a major league roster along with Marco Gonzales, Wyatt Mills and Eli Morgan.

Legumina, ranked as the Twins' No. 26 prospect, wrapped up 2022 with the Double-A Wichita Wind Surge after some time in High-A with the Cedar Rapids Kernels, posting a 4.80 ERA on the season over a career-high 86 â…“ innings pitched while fanning 92 batters over that span. The 6-2 righty was drafted by the Twins with the 239th pick of the 2019 draft after a three-year career at GU that saw him pick up All-WCC and Collegiate Baseball All-America preseason honors. Legumina was previously drafted by the Cleveland Guardians in the 35th round of the 2018 Draft after a year in which he broke the program record for saves (13) to go with a 2.77 ERA and 52 K's over 48 â…” innings.

Among other pro Zag pitchers that saw action in the big leagues in 2022, both Gonzales (4.13 ERA, 183 IP, 103 K) and Morgan (3.38 ERA, 66 ⅔ IP, 72 K) were major contributors for ALDS teams in the Seattle Mariners and Cleveland Guardians, respectively. Mills earned the call-up with the Mariners last season before being traded to the Kansas City Royals, making 27 combined appearances for both teams last season. Gonzales is entering his seventh season with the M's, while Morgan is set for his third with Cleveland. Other former GU standouts making noise in the minors include former All-Americans RHP Alek Jacob (Triple-A El Paso)  — who was named the San Diego Padres' Pitching Prospect of the Year by MLB.com — Brett Harris (Oakland Athletics, Double-A Midland) — whose diving catch into the dugout won MiLB Play of the Year for 2022 — and Troy Johnston (Double-A Pensacola) who was named the Miami Marlins' Pensacola MVP.

The Twins' 2023 season is set to begin on March 30 with a three-game road series against the Kansas City Royals.
