WBB Faces Marquette in Next Round of Battle 4 Atlantis

The Golden Eagles knocked off No. 3 Texas in the opening round

THE TIP OFF
- The Gonzaga Bulldogs are coming off the best win in program history as they defeated No. 6/4 Louisville, 79-67, in overtime in the first game of the Battle 4 Atlantis tournament. The previous highest ranked win for GU was back in Dec. 2018 against No. 8 Stanford. 
- In the victory over Louisville, Eliza Hollingsworth scored 18 points while Kaylynne Truong had a big performance in overtime to help Gonzaga upset No. 6 Louisville 79-67 in Saturday night's first round of the Battle 4 Atlantis. Truong scored 10 of her 16 points in the OT for the Bulldogs. Brynna Maxwell scored a game-high 21 points to lead Gonzaga.
- The Zags have five players currently averaging double digits in the first four games of the season, including Yvonne Ejim (19.3), Brynna Maxwell (12.8), Eliza Hollingsworth (11.8), Kaylynne Truong (10.5) and Kayleigh Truong (10.3).
- Yvonne Ejim was just shy of her second double double this season against Louisville as she scored 13 points and hauled in nine rebounds. 
- This is the second year in a row that the Zags have traveled somewhere tropical around the holidays as GU won the Rainbow Wahine Showdown tournament last year in Honolulu, Hawaii.
- The Zags are receiving votes in the most recent AP Poll and USA TODAY Sports/WBCA Top 25 Coaches Poll.
- The Bulldogs were recently picked to win the West Coast Conference. The Zags received nine first-place votes that and totaled 81 points in the poll. The poll is voted on by the league's 10 head coaches, and coaches are not allowed to vote for their own team. Portland received one first-place votes and was selected to finish second with 71 points, while BYU was voted to finish third with 55 points.
- Gonzaga has amassed a conference record of 257-33 (.886) during the last 17 seasons, which includes 16 West Coast Conference regular-season titles and nine WCC Tournament championships.
- Seniors Kayleigh Truong, Kaylynne Truong and junior Yvonne Ejim were also named to the Preseason All-WCC Team. Ejim is the reigning WCC Sixth Woman of the Year while also receiving All-WCC Second Team in 2021-22. Kayleigh Truong earned All-WCC First Team honors after her performance in 2021-22.  Kaylynne Truong was named to the WCC Tournament team along with the Rainbow Wahine Showdown MVP as she was ranked third on the team in scoring last year. 
- Last season, the Zags advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the fifth-straight year under head coach Lisa Fortier.

SCOUTING THE GOLDEN EAGLES
- Marquette is coming off a gritty, 68-61, win over No. 3 Texas in the opening round of Battle 4 Atlantis. The win marked the best in program history.
- Against the Longhorns, Jordan King went for a game-high and career-high 25 points. This was the second time this season and fifth time in her career that she has finished with 20-plus points.
- Marquette finished the game shooting 36.2 percent (21-of-58) from the field, 30.8 percent (4-of-13) from 3-point range and 64.7 percent (22-of-34) from the free throw line.
- Marquette is currently sitting at 4-0 on the year with its other wins against Farleigh Dickinson, Holy Cross, and Milwuakee.
- The Golden Eagles are 25-7 against non-conference opponents under Coach Duffy.
- Coach Duffy is off to the best coaching start through three seasons of any coach in program history. She boasts a 70-26 overall mark (.729) at Marquette.
- In the 96 games of the Coach Duffy era, the Golden Eagles have out-rebounded their opponent 80 times.

THE SERIES
SERIES INFO: This marks the fourth time the Zags and the Golden Eagles have met in program history. The Bulldogs are currently 1-2 against Marquette with the series dating back to 2007.    
STREAK: Marquette -1    
FIRST MEETING: The Golden Eagles won the first contest in 2007, 74-60, at home.  
 LAST MEETING: The Zags fell in a close road game, 80-77, to Marquette. The other game in program history was in 2008 when GU hosted the Golden Eagles and won 77-64 in 2008.
