Box Score LOS ANGELES — Gonzaga Volleyball broke the single-season record for service aces in the rally era in its season finale against Loyola Marymount at Gersten Pavilion Tuesday night and tied things up with an efficient second set, but ultimately fell in four (14-25, 25-19, 19-25, 10-25).
The Bulldogs conclude the season with a 6-23 record overall and 2-16 record in conference play.
GU's six aces put the Zags at 179 on the season to surpass the previous record of 175, set in 2019. Keau Kamake'eaina supplied a team-high three, with Viktoriya Ivanova, Zoe Thiros and Alisa Kim adding one each. Though she didn't pick up an ace in Tuesday's game, Kennedy Croft broke the record for career aces in the rally era with 108 total and 27 in her final season as a Zag.
Thiros' 10 kills led the Zags, followed by seven from Alyssa Hughes on team-high .462 hitting and five each from Kennedy Croft and McKenna Marshall. Keau Kamake'eaina generated 25 of GU's 29 assists, while finishing second to Kim's team-high 13 digs with eight of her own.
Despite three kills on game-high .750 hitting from Hughes in the first and two more from Thiros, the Lions surged ahead thanks to an 11-2 run that saw three LMU service aces and didn't look back en route to a 25-14 set win.
The Zags built a two-point lead midway through the second on a 3-0 run capped by their first service ace of the night from Kim, growing that lead to as much as five, 20-15, on another 4-0 run that included Thiros tying the season service ace record with another ace. Both teams traded points until an LMU attack error and Thiros' seventh kill of the night pushed the Zags over the top to tie things up at a set apiece.
After weathering an early 4-0 run, GU led by as much as three in the third, holding the Lions to .270 hitting despite 14 kills. Kamake'eaina connected on two of her three aces in the set to add more to the Zags' record-breaking total, but LMU turned up the pressure at the net late, building a lead and following up a late Zags attack error with their seventh ace of the night to close out a 25-19 win and go up 2-1.
In a decisive fourth set, GU kept it tight until the Lions ripped off a massive 14-2 run to take control. Despite three more kills from Hughes to put her up to seven on the night with just one error, LMU kept rolling to seal their four-set win with a 25-10 set win.
