No. 23/25 WBB Defeats SFA on the Road, 71-59

The Zags now travel to No. 2 Stanford on Sunday, Dec. 4

NACOGDOCHES, Texas  — Kaylynne Truong had 21 points and seven assists, Yvonne Ejim added 19 points and nine rebounds and No. 23 Gonzaga beat Stephen F. Austin 71-59 on Thursday night in a homecoming for the Truong twins.

Brynna Maxwell was the third Zag to finish with double figures as she finished with 13 points for Gonzaga (7-1). Calli Stokes made her first career start and scored eight points.

"I am really proud of our team's effort," head coach Lisa Fortier said. "We came down here to play a really good team with a little bit of a rough situation with our availability. Our players played extremely tough. They went possession by possession. We didn't give too many back. We started the game great and just continued to build on that. I thought we made big plays every time they responded and went on a run of their own. We never let it get too close and we responded ourselves with a great executed offensive play or a great stop. I am really proud of them and happy for the team."

Ejim scored the first seven points of the game and Gonzaga made its first seven field goals during a 14-0 run. Stephen F. Austin missed its first 11 shots and trailed 23-5 before making its first basket with under a minute to play in the opening quarter.

Gonzaga led by as many as 18 points in the game. SFA scored the opening six points of the fourth quarter to get within 53-49, but Maxwell converted a three-point play for Gonzaga and Truong added a 3-pointer for a 10-point lead.

Overall, GU shot 50 percent from the floor and held the Ladyjacks to only 37 percent. The Zags also outrebounded SFA 31-30, with Ejim leading the way with nine. The Bulldogs scored 26 points inside the paint and scored 11 in fast breaks. Defensively, GU forced 18 turnovers from SFA and grabbed six steals.

Records: Overall, Gonzaga moves to 2-0 against Stephen F. Austin in program history.

The Zags went a perfect 10-for-10 from the charity stripe, which ties the program record for free throw percentage. The last time the Bulldogs went 100 percent from the free throw line with at least 10 attempted was on Dec. 17, 2019 at Wyoming, when the team went 16-for-16.

Kaylynne Truong tied her career-high of 21 points and also dished out a team-high seven assists on the night.

Truong State: Kayleigh Truong and Kaylynne Truong both graduated from Jersey Village High School in Houston. In 2019, they led the Falcons to a District 17-6A championship with a 33-3 overall record and 16-0 in district play.
