SPOKANE, Wash. – The No. 22 Gonzaga women's basketball team battled against Montana in its last non-conference regular season game, and came out on top, 82-67.
Five Zags scored in double figures, led by
Brynna Maxwell's 23 points.
Kaylynne Truong (18),
Yvonne Ejim (15),
Eliza Hollingsworth (13) and
McKayla Williams (11) also had double digit performances for Gonzaga. This is the second time this season that GU had five players score in double figures as it also happened on Nov. 12 versus Southern Utah.
Maxwell scored 12 points alone in the first quarter and the Zags took a 23-18 lead after the first 10 minutes. As a team, the Bulldogs shot 66.7 percent from the three-point line and didn't allow any threes from the Lady Griz.
In the second quarter, Maxwell made two more threes to score six points. The Zags scored 15 in the second to take a 38-32 lead going into halftime. In the first half, Gonzaga shot 38 percent from the floor and 50 percent from beyond the arc as the team recorded six three-pointers.
Defensively, GU forced seven turnovers and scored 11 points off those miscues. Gonzaga also outrebounded Montana 22-20.
The Bulldogs went on a 9-0 run in the third quarter to extend their lead to 53-42, with just over two minutes remaining in the frame. Truong scored a team-high seven points along with two rebounds and steals.
Going into the final quarter, the Zags were up 58-48. The Bulldogs went on another 7-0 run to take a 67-54 lead midway through the fourth. Truong scored nine points in the final ten minutes to secure the 82-67 victory.
Overall, GU shot 50.8 percent from the floor and 50 percent from the three-point line, scoring 12 threes on the night. Gonzaga held Montana to a shooting performance of 39.1 percent and forced 15 turnovers, On the glass, the Bulldogs outrebounded the Lady Griz, 39-36, with Ejim grabbing a team-high nine.
Records: Gonzaga improves to 12-2 on the season and closes out its non-conference slate. Montana falls to 4-7 on the year as the Zags have won 10-straight against the Lady Griz.
Up Next: Gonzaga is off until Dec. 29 to enjoy the holiday break. The Zags travel to Pepperdine to continue West Coast Conference play with a 4 p.m. tip on the 29th. GU then goes to Loyola Marymount University on Dec. 31 at 2 p.m.
