MALIBU, Calif. – Kaylynne Truong hit six 3-pointers and scored 26 points, both career highs, to lead No. 19/20 Gonzaga to a 77-63 win over Pepperdine on Thursday. The victory marked the Bulldogs' sixth-straight win and 13th-straight over the Waves.
Yvonne Ejim added 17 points and
Eliza Hollingsworth had 16 and both grabbed nine rebounds for the Bulldogs (13-2, 3-0 West Coast Conference).
Brynna Maxwell scored 10, eight in the second quarter when the Zags took control.
In the first quarter, Gonzaga outscored the Waves 24-16 with Truong contributing 11. Ejim scored seven and grabbed a team-high three rebounds. The Zags went 3-for-3 from beyond the arc and shot 61.5 percent overall from the floor.
The Zags scored another 20 points in the second quarter to maintain a 44-28 lead at halftime. Maxwell scored eight points in the second quarter and grabbed three rebounds.
In the first half, GU outrebounded the Waves 21-16 and shot 51.6 percent from the floor. Defensively, Gonzaga held Pepperdine to 30 percent from the field and forced five turnovers.
Ejim paced the Zags in the third with six points and three rebounds when GU had its biggest lead of the night of 21 points midway through the third.
The Waves got no closer than eight points when Pepperdine's Theres Mbanefo converted a three-point play with 7 1/2 minutes to play. Truong answered Pepperdine's run with a 3-pointer to help kickstart a 7-0 run for the Zags. Truong eventually took over in the fourth quarter to score 10 points and secure the victory for Gonzaga.
Overall, Gonzaga shot 43.9 percent from the field and 40 percent from beyond the arc. The Bulldogs outrebounded Pepperdine, 44-35 overall. GU only allowed three three-pointers from Pepperdine as they shot 20 percent from beyond the arc.
Records: The Zags improve to 13-2 on the year and 3-0 in the West Coast Conference. Pepperdine falls to 6-7 and 1-2 in the conference.
Kaylynne Truong scored a career-high 26 points on the night. This is the fourth time this season that she has hit 20 points or more in a game.
Brynna Maxwell continues her streak of making a three-pointer in every game so far this year.
