WBB Defeats USF on a Buzzer Beater, 83-82

Melody Kempton made the last-second shot for Gonzaga

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – In the second contest against the University of San Francisco this week, the Gonzaga women's basketball team came out on top with a last-second bucket from senior Melody Kempton.
 
Junior Kayleigh Truong dished in the pass from underneath the basket with 1.1 seconds left in regulation to set up Kempton for the game-winning shot.
 
The Zags were relentless in the game as they were down as many as 12 in the third quarter and trailed for over 32 minutes of the game, but came out with the road win.
 
With 49 seconds left in the game, Gonzaga was down six and a timeout was called by GU.
 
Kempton drew a foul with 38 seconds left and made both her free throws to cut the deficit to four. Jessica McDowell-White then drew a foul with 34 seconds left and drained both her free throws to make it a six-point lead for USF again.
 
With 27 seconds remaining, sophomore Yvonne Ejim made a second-chance layup to make it only a four-point lead for the Dons.
 
Twelve seconds remained in the game and Kempton made another layup after getting an offensive rebound, making the Bulldogs within three.
 
With seven seconds left, Kempton drew another foul after grabbing an offensive board and made both free throws to bring the Zags within one.
 
USF had the ball with one second left, but junior Kaylynne Truong drew a foul to give the ball back to the Bulldogs, which led to the game-winning play.
 
Overall, Kaylynne Truong led GU with a career-high 21 points and Kempton led the team with nine rebounds with 12 points. Other double-figure scorers were seniors Cierra Walker with 14 points and Abby O'Connor with 12.
 
In the first quarter, the Zags scored 22 points, which was led by Walker with six points. The Bulldogs shot at 50 percent from the field and had 10 points come from inside the paint.
 
The Dons came out shooting at 68.8 percent and had a 26-22 lead at the end of the first.
 
Walker continued her hot scoring performance with eight points in the second quarter as she drained two from beyond the arc. O'Connor also scored five points in the second and Kempton recorded a team-high three assists and two rebounds.
 
Despite scoring seven three-pointers in the first half alone, the Zags were down 52-40 at halftime. Dons recorded eight three-pointers and was shooting at an overall 71.4 percent in the opening 20 minutes.
 
The Zags went on a 16-0 run in the third quarter to eventually take the lead, 61-59, after a bucket from redshirt senior Anamaria Virjoghe with eight seconds left.
 
In the final quarter, Gonzaga scored 22 points with Kaylynne Truong and Kempton both scoring eight points.
 
Overall, Gonzaga outrebounded USF 40-26 and forced 13 turnovers. The Zags also scored 32 points inside the paint and 24 off second-chance opportunities. The Zags shot at 41.4 percent in the field and 83.3 percent from the charity stripe.
 
Records: Gonzaga improves to 20-5 overall and 11-1 in the WCC. USF falls to 13-13 and 7-7 in the conference. This also marks the 12th-straight win over the Dons as GU moves to 50-26 overall against USF.
