SPOKANE, Wash. – The Gonzaga women's basketball team returned home to play a rescheduled game against Santa Clara and came out on top, 74-58.
The win marked head coach
Lisa Fortier's 200th career victory at the helm. She is the fastest GU coach to reach the mark along with the youngest at only 40 years old.
Five GU players scored in double figures with junior
Kayleigh Truong leading the way with 15. Sophomore
Yvonne Ejim and redshirt senior
Anamaria Virjoghe both scored 12 as Virjoghe also grabbed nine rebounds. The 12 points was a career-high performance from Virjoghe.
Rounding out the double-digit performances was senior
Melody Kempton as she scored 11 points and senior
Cierra Walker added another 10.
The Zags got things rolling fast as they came out and took a 7-0 lead in the opening minutes.
Kayleigh Truong and Walker both led the Bulldogs with five points and two assists. Virjoghe grabbed a team-high six boards in just eight minutes of play.
The Bulldogs were shooting a staggering 72.7 percent from the field and forced five turnovers defensively.
With a 19-10 lead after the first quarter, the Zags continued their offensive performance with another 19 points in the second. Sophomore
Yvonne Ejim scored six points and the team had 16 points come from inside the paint.
Gonzaga held the Broncos to only a 16.7 shooting percentage in the second as the Bulldogs took a 38-19 lead at halftime.
The Zags went on a 6-0 run in the third quarter to extend its lead to 27 points with just under five minutes remaining in the frame.
As a team, GU scored 21 points in the third with six different Zags scoring and
Kayleigh Truong leading the way with five.
Going into the final quarter with a 59-35 lead, Gonzaga started out the fourth with a bucket from sophomore
McKayla Williams. The Zags went on to score 15 points in the final ten minutes with 12 of those coming from inside the paint.
Overall, GU shot at 58.6 percent and scored 50 points from inside the paint. The Bulldogs dominated the boards again with a 31-27 advantage. Defensively, Gonzaga forced 16 turnovers and scored 18 points off those miscues.
Records: Gonzaga improves to 22-6 and 13-2 in the WCC. Santa Clara falls to 14-12 and 8-8 in the conference.
