SPOKANE, Wash. – The Gonzaga women's basketball team fell short of No. 16 Brigham Young University on Saturday, 62-50.
Gonzaga was led by senior Melody Kempton, who scored 10 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Senior Cierra Walker, junior Kayleigh Truong and sophomore Yvonne Ejim all scored nine points for the Zags. BYU was paced by Paisley Harding, who scored 22 points for the Cougars.
The Bulldogs came out fast in the first quarter as the team took a 20-10 lead after the end of ten minutes. Kayleigh Truong led the team with seven points and senior Abby O'Connor grabbed a team-high four rebounds. The Zags shot at 50 percent from beyond the arc with four different players cashing in on a three.
Gonzaga held BYU to only a 33.3 shooting percentage in the first quarter with Paisley Harding scoring six of their ten points. Lauren Gustin scored the other four points for the Cougars.
In the second quarter, the Zags went 100 percent from the three-point line with Walker making two and freshman Bree Salenbien also making one. Defensively, Gonzaga forced five turnovers in the ten minutes as O'Connor and Kayleigh Truong both grabbed a steal.
Going into the locker rooms, Gonzaga was up 35-20 and was shooting at 63.6 percent from beyond the arc and 37.5 in the field. Kayleigh Truong and Walker both had nine points and O'Connor lead the team with five boards.
The Cougars were held to a 30.8 shooting percentage in the first half and went 0-for-11 from the three-point line. Gonzaga was also outrebounding BYU 25-14.
In the third, the Zags scored three points, all coming from Kempton. BYU went on a 12-0 run and overall scored 19 points in the period, led by Harding with 12. The Cougars also shot at 47 percent and outrebounded Gonzaga 14-6 to take a one-point lead going into the fourth quarter, 39-38.
The Zags tried to take back over in the final quarter, but fell short after shooting 29.4 percent from the field. Kempton and Ejim both scored five points in the fourth as Ejim grabbed seven rebounds. BYU scored 23 points in the final ten minutes to keep GU out of reach.
Overall, GU was outrebounded 41-38 and shot at 29.5 percent from the field. Defensively, the Zags forced 13 turnovers and scored 18 points off of those.
Records: Gonzaga is now 17-5 overall and 8-1 in conference play. BYU moves to 19-1 and 8-1 in the WC
