Box Score RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The Gonzaga men's tennis team earned a victory today over UC Riverside, dropping only three sets in the process.
The team opened the day by winning the doubles point, giving them a 1-0 lead heading into the singles competition.
On court one, Gonzaga's Sasha Trkulja and Matthew Hollingworth earned a 6-2 win over UC Riverside's Antreas Djakouris and Joshua Roth. In spot No. 2, Gonzaga's Leon Roider and Tom Hann came out victorious against UC Riverside's Daniel Velek and Aarav Sane, 6-2.
Having clinched the doubles point, Gonzaga dropped their first set of the match when UC Riverside's Andreas Whelan-Merediz and Ryan Huynh earned a 6-4 victory over Gonzaga's Oliver Andersson and Arthus de la Bassetiere on court three.
As the match moved to singles competition, Gonzaga displayed their dominance early and often, starting with a 6-3, 6-0 victory by Roider over Sane on court six. Gonzaga's lead stretched to 3-0 when Andersson defeated Roth 6-0, 6-3 in the No. 3 spot. Gonzaga clinched the team win with a 6-0, 6-4 win by Hann over Whelan-Merediz on court five.
Having already clinched the win, Gonzaga increased their lead to 5-0 when Bassetiere defeated UC Riverside's Justin Lamy 6-4, 6-2 on court four. Gonzaga's winning streak continued, as Hollingworth's 6-4, 6-4 victory over Velek on court two raised Gonzaga's lead to 6-0.
Going for the sweep, Trkulja and Djakouris battled in what was the most intense match of the event. In the end, Djakouris earned the victory and UC Riverside's only team point on court one with a 3-6, 6-3, 1-0 (11-9) win. Before Trkulja's singles loss, Gonzaga had earned 13 straight team points since their 3-4 loss against the University of Denver.
