SPRING, Texas – Gonzaga men's golf completed their final round of the Colin Montgomerie HBU Invitational on Tuesday at Augusta Pines Golf Course. After shooting seven-over (295) in each of the first two rounds on Monday, the Bulldogs combined to shoot three-over (291) in the final round to finish in second place as a team at 17-over (881). GU led the 16-team field on the course's par 3 holes, averaging 3.27 strokes per hole. Their 163 combined pars were second-most of any team and their 39 combined birdies were third-most.
Charlie Magruder continued to make a push for the individual title on Tuesday. Heading into the final round, the junior from Las Vegas was one-under par (143) overall and in second place behind Southeastern Louisiana's Michael Landry (-4, 140). Magruder was four-under on the day through 14 holes and held a one stroke lead over Landry. However, two birdies and two pars by Landry, paired with two bogeys by Magruder in the final four holes propelled Landry toward the eventual individual title. Magruder completed his final round with a score of two-under (70) and would finish in second place with a combined score of three-under (213). He finished with 33 pars and 12 birdies for the tournament, and his average of 3.00 strokes per hole on the course's par 3s led the 82-player field.
Matthew Ruel jumped up two spots on the individual leaderboard to finish in a tie for 9th place at five-over (221). After shooting one-over (73) and three-over (75) on Monday, Ruel matched his first round score of one-over (73) in Round 3, adding nine pars and four birdies to his overall total of 34 and eight.
Zach Stocker made the biggest jump of any Zag on Tuesday, climbing 14 spots on the individual leaderboard and joining Ruel in a tie for 9th at five-over (221). He posted the second-best score in the final round, shooting three-under (69) and made the most birdies on the day with seven. He finished with a total of 31 pars and ten birdies for the tournament.
Jace Minni shot eight-over (80) in Round 3 and finished in a tie for 37th at 14-over (230). He combined to make 33 pars and five birdies overall.
Holden Backes (+15, 231) finished in a tie for 41st place, making 32 pars and four birdies for the tournament.
Magruder (-3, 213) would finish three strokes behind Michael Landry (-6, 210), who shot two-under (70) on Tuesday to finish atop the individual leaderboard. Southeastern Louisiana took home the team title with a combined score of four-over (868), finishing 13 strokes ahead of the Zags (+17, 881).
Gonzaga will head to Chandler, Arizona next to compete in the Wyoming Cowboy Classic on April 4-5. The two-day tournament is hosted by the University of Wyoming and will be played at Whirlwind Golf Club. Live scoring will be available at GoZags.com.
