PORTLAND, Ore. — Gonzaga men's and women's track wrapped up the Portland Distance Carnival on Saturday with plenty to celebrate, including 13 top-five finishes, four event wins, and a broken meet record in the women's 1500m by Alicia Anderson.
Emilee Groth got it started for the Zags in the women's 400m hurdles, taking home first place with a 1:04.57 time that stands as a new personal best, just ahead of Leighton Joy's third-place 1:08.89 time.
All five Zag women's runners competing in the 800m cracked the Top 10, with Alyssa Bienfang running the third-fastest time in program history (2:13.89) en route to a second place finish to lead the way. Ellie Armbruster (second, 2:17.35), Emma Flood (sixth, 2:19.96), Karina Smith (ninth, 2:23.70) and Taylor Biondi (tenth, 2:26.26) rounded out the rest of the pack.
Yacine Guermali and James Mwaura went 1-2 in the 1500m, with Guermali putting down a 3:46.32 time in his first race of the 2022 outdoor season. Ben Brown (ninth, 3:55.92) and Jackson Lyne (10th, 3:56.30) made it four Zags in the Top 10. Mwaura followed that up with a first-place finish in the men's 5K (13:57.28), ahead of Dominic Arce (ninth, 14:24.36) and Nicky DiMartino (10th, 14:27.34).
In the women's 1500m, Alicia Anderson surpassed the meet record en route to a 4:22.61 fourth-place finish ahead of Sadie Tuckwood (sixth, 4:32.02) and Brittney Hansen (ninth, 4:39.23). Makenna Edwards led the way in the women's 5K with a sixth-place 17:39.44 time, with Alexi Fogo (seventh, 17:51.12) and Lily Visser (eighth, 17:55.37) on her heels.
Cullen McEachern put down a new personal best and projected NCAA qualifying time while leading the Zags in the 3000m steeplechase, taking second place with a 8:46.36 time that ranks as the third fastest in program history. Behind him, Ben Hogan (8:59.02) and Cooper Laird (9:05.94) took third and fourth, respectively.
