MISSOULA, Mont. – In the first-ever meeting between the programs, Gonzaga women's soccer and Creighton played to a 1-1 draw in the third game of the Rumble of the Rockies hosted by the University of Montana Sunday.
Despite outshooting Creighton 24-11, the Bulldogs (0-1-1) held just a 6-4 edge in shots on goal. GU also had a 6-5 advantage in corner kicks, and the advantage in possession.
Gonzaga opened the scoring in the 21st minute off a cross from
Kacy Johnston to
Marissa Garcia. The Zags' first goal of the season was a pass played to the far post and headed in by the sophomore. Garcia's fifth career goal and Johnston's third collegiate assist.
In the 71
st minute, Creighton (0-0-2) evened the score off a header with a header from Abigail Santana to the bottom right of the goal. Ariana Mondiri was credited with the assist.
The Bulldogs forced Creighton's Keelan Terrell into five saves, while
Lyza Bosselmann made three for GU. Gonzaga's
Erin Healy took a game-high five shots, and
Kelsey Oyler had a match-high two shots on frame.
The Zags open their home schedule Saturday against Oregon (1-0-0) at 7 p.m. The Ducks make only their third-ever trip to Luger Field and first since 2006.Live video and stats will be available on GoZags.com.
