WTEN: Zags Find Success at Day Two of the Gonzaga Invite

SPOKANE, Wash. --  Earlier today, the Gonzaga women's tennis team continued their participation in the Gonzaga Invite. This is the third consecutive season the Zags have performed in the Gonzaga Invite, with Kianna Oda and Caroline Wernli winning the Blue Doubles bracket last year.
 
Beginning in the doubles competition, Gonzaga's Emily Robertson and Kianna Oda advanced to the Gold Doubles Final by defeating Washington State's Eva Alvarez Sande and Elyse Tse by a score of 6-3. Shortly after, Gonzaga's Tiegan Aitken and Ella Nielsen lost 6-2 in the Gold Doubles Semifinals to Washington State's Yura Nakagawa and Lunda Kumholm. Gonzaga's Rose Hayes and Lia Espinal closed today's doubles competition for the Zags, advancing to the Blue Doubles Final by earning a 7-6 victory against Seattle's Lola Tavcar and Lamija Avdic.
 
Transitioning to the singles competition, Oda battled in her Gold Singles Quarterfinals match, but lost 6-1, 7-6 to Portland's Rimona Rouf. Later on, Robertson dominated in her Gold Singles Quarterfinals match, clinching a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Montana State's Marta Garcia Reboredo to advance. In the Gold Singles Semifinals, Robertson lost 6-3, 6-2 to Washington State's Eva Alvarez, Sande.
 
Two Zags also performed in the Blue Singles bracket. Hayes earned a comeback victory over Portland's Aleksandra Dimitrijevic in the Blue Singles Quarterfinals, winning by a score of 5-7, 6-3, 10-5. In the Blue Singles Semifinals, Hayes lost 6-0, 2-6, 12-10 to Montana State's Meg McCarty. Nielsen also advanced to the Blue Single Semifinals, clinching a 6-2, 6-4 win in her match against Seattle's Yuna Kadowaki. Facing Washington State's Lunda Kumholm, Nielsen lost in the Blue Singles Semifinals by a score of 6-2, 6-1.
 
In the Red Singles Quarterfinals, Wernli lost 6-1, 6-4 to Idaho's Rachelle Starreveld. Aitken also performed in the Red Singles Consolation Quarterfinals, earning an impressive 6-1, 6-4 victory against Idaho's Naomi Schraeder.
 
Opening the White Singles Quarterfinals, Espinal clinched a 6-2, 6-2 victory against Montana's Shivika Agrawal. Later in the day, Espinal lost 6-4, 6-2 to Idaho's Ida Johansson in her White Singles Semifinal match. Gonzaga's Savannah Johnson had a bye in the White Singles Consolation Quarterfinals, and automatically advanced to the Semifinal.
 
Up next:
Gonzaga's participation at the Gonzaga Invite will conclude tomorrow. Action will begin with Robertson and Oda, who are scheduled to face Washington State's Yura Nakagawa and Lunda Kumholm in the Gold Doubles Final, and Hayes and Espinal, who are scheduled to play Idaho's Selin Sepken and Ida Johansson in the Blue Doubles Final.
 
Tomorrow's action will be concluded in the Red Singles Consolation bracket, as Aitken will play Seattle's Lola Tavcar in the Semifinal.
