MBB Faces No. 2 Purdue in Maui Invitational

Zags look for 3-0 start to season

THE TIP OFF
- Gonzaga opens the 2023 Allstate Maui Invitational against No. 2 Purdue at the SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center Monday at 2 p.m. Pacific Time. It will be the first of three games in three days for the Zags.
- This is GU's sixth appearance in the Maui Invitational and the first since winning the 2018 title. The Bulldogs boast an 11-4 record in the event with tournament titles in 2009 and 2018.
- Gonzaga is 44-12 under Mark Few in events during the week of Thanksgiving, and 33-6 in the last nine Thanksgiving week events. Under Mark Few, GU has won seven tournaments during the week of Thanksgiving, and played in 11 of the 16 tournament championship games.
- The Bulldogs are coming off a 123-57 victory over Eastern Oregon in Spokane on Nov. 14. Graham Ike had 25 points and 11 rebounds in just 18 minutes. Braden Huff scored 23 points and Anton Watson added 20 as five Gonzaga players finished in double figures. Both of them joined Ike in playing less than 20 minutes.
- The Zags are No. 11 in the Associated Press poll. The Bulldogs' 135 straight AP Poll appearances top the nation, with Houston's 66 consecutive appearances as the next best.
- Graham Ike was named preseason first team All-American by The Sporting News.
 
SCOUTING THE BOILERMAKERS
- Purdue opened its season with three victories all at home. After rolling to wins over Samford and Morehead State, the Boilermakers grabbed an 83-71 victory over Xavier in the Gavitt Games Nov. 13.
- Zach Edey recorded his 41st career double-double with 28 points, 11 rebounds and four blocks. Braden Smith tallied 12 points, seven assists and six rebounds.
- Through three games this year, Edey has 62 points, 30 rebounds and 11 blocks in just 77:25 of action.
- Smith is averaging 11.7 points, 8.3 assists and 6.0 rebounds per game.
- The Boilermakers are now at least 3-0 for the third straight year and have shot at least 50.9 percent from the field in all three games this year.
- Purdue received its highest preseason national ranking since 1987, and was picked to defend its Big Ten title.
- Edey, the defending national player of the year, was picked as the Big Ten Preseason Player of the Year and named preseason first team All-American.
 
SERIES INFO
- This is the fourth all-time meeting between Gonzaga and Purdue, with the Boilermakers winning all three previous matchups.
- The programs met in the PK Legacy semifinals last season in Portland on Nov. 25. The Boilermakers won 84-66. Zach Edey scored 15 of his 23 points in the final 15 minutes, Braden Smith and Fletcher Loyer each added 14. Nolan Hickman had 15 points and five assists.
- Purdue won the first all-time meeting, 83-68, in West Lafayette on Nov. 18, 1998. The Boilermakers were ranked No. 15 at the time.
- In the second meeting, No. 25 Purdue held off Gonzaga in the NCAA Tournament West Regional semifinal in Albuquerque, N.M., 75-66, March 23, 2000.
- Gonzaga has won six of its last eight games against Big Ten foes, including an 84-78 victory over Illinois in the quarterfinals of the Maui Invitational in 2018.

- Depending on the outcome of Monday's game, Gonzaga faces either Syracuse or Tennessee.
- A win on Monday over Purdue advances the Zags to the semifinals Tuesday at 5 p.m. Pacific Time.
- A loss to Purdue moves GU to the consolation side of the bracket for a 11:30 a.m. PT game Tuesday.

- The Bulldogs were in the event in 2002, 2005, 2009, 2013 and 2018.
- No. 3 Gonzaga topped No. 1 Duke in the 2018 Maui Invitational championship game, 89-87. Rui Hachimura earned MVP honors after scoring 20 points in the final.
- The Zags won the 2009 tournament title behind co-Tournament MVP performances from Steven Gray and Matt Bouldin.
- Adam Morrison was named the tournament's MVP in 2005, following a tournament record 43-point performance against Michigan State.

- GU outscored Eastern Oregon 84-18 in the paint, while outrebounding the Mountaineers 62-29.
