SPOKANE, Wash. – The Gonzaga men's and women's track teams released their indoor schedule for the 2023-24 season on Friday. Their indoor slate kicks off on Dec. 2 and includes six meets at The Podium near downtown Spokane.
For the second straight season, the Zags will open at the Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener in Boston, Mass. Last year, both squads etched names into the GU record book at the event.
Kristen Garcia recorded a program third-best 5,000m time of 16:26.72, while
Yacine Guermali and
James Mwaura picked up program best and second-best times of 13:33.99 and 13:39.39 in their own 5,000m race.
Next, Gonzaga will return to Spokane to race in the Spokane Invite for their first of six meets at The Podium on Dec. 9.
Wil Smith headlined the Bulldogs' 24 Top-10 finishes and three individuals wins at the 2022 meet with a Podium facility 5,000m record.
Ellie Armbruster also improved her GU program record in the 400m race last season, later breaking that record again during the indoor season.
After a month-long break, GU returns to the track on Jan. 12 and 13 at The Podium for the Spokane Sports Showcase and Spokane Indoor Challenge. Smith, Garcia, and
Tommy O'Neil highlighted the Zags at the Indoor Challenge last season after each picking up individual wins in distance races.
Gonzaga then hits the road for the first time in 2024 to Seattle for the UW Invitational on Jan. 26-27. In 2023, Guermali and Smith inked program second-best times in the 1,500m and 3,000m races as two of 11 GU runners to post personal record times at the event. Additionally on Jan. 27, the Zags will have runners competing at The Podium in the Inland Northwest Invite.
Both teams will remain in Spokane for the Riverfront Invite & Multis on Feb. 1-3 before a split-squad weekend on Feb. 9-10. Another trip to Seattle takes a few runners to the Husky Classic while the rest compete at the Whitworth Invite at The Podium. The Zags etched three program records at the Husky Classic last season, with Armbruster (400m),
Caramia Mestler (5,000m) and Smith (3,000m) marking new Gonzaga bests. At the Whitworth Invite in February of 2023, 10 GU runners put down new personal best times among 14 Top-10 finishes.
The indoor season wraps up March 8-9 with the NCAA Indoor Championships back in Boston, Mass. Live results for all events and streaming links when available will be listed on GoZags.com. Follow @ZagRunning for updates, meet day content and more.
