No. 21 WBB Takes Over South Dakota State, 83-58

Four Zags scored in double figures

SPOKANE, Wash. — Eliza Hollingsworth had 17 points and 12 rebounds, Yvonne Ejim scored 16 points and Brynna Maxwell added 15 to help No. 21 Gonzaga cruise to an 83-58 win over South Dakota State on Sunday. Kayleigh Truong rounded out the double figure scoring efforts for GU with 11 points and six assists.

Gonzaga (11-2), which has won five games in a row and holds onto its 25 home game winning streak.

Hollingsworth shot 6-of-9 from the field and 3-of-4 from 3-point range and finished with two steals and two blocks. She recorded her third double double of the year.

Mesa Byon and Jenna Popp scored 12 points apiece to lead South Dakota State (6-4).

Ejim scored 10 points on 5-of-5 shooting as the Bulldogs jumped to a 17-4 lead with 4:26 left in the first quarter and South Dakota State trailed by double figures the rest of the way. Madison Mathiowetz converted a three-point play that trimmed the deficit to 12 early in the second quarter, but Ejim answered with a bucket in the paint, Maxwell followed with a layup and Hollingsworth hit a 3-pointer to make it 35-14 with 5:41 remaining in the first half.

The Zags shot 67% (20 of 30) from the field, 6 of 11 (55%) from 3-point range, and scored 15 points off eight SDSU turnovers before intermission.

GU continued the hot offense in the third quarter by opening the second half with a 14-2 run. The Bulldogs scored 26 points overall in the third, led by Maxwell's nine points.

Defensively, GU held Brooklyn Meyer, who went into the game leading the Jackrabbits — and the Summit League — in scoring (17.0 per game), rebounding (9.8) and blocks (2.3), to just two points, on 1-of-5 shooting, and a rebound at halftime. The sophomore finished with four points and two rebounds — both season lows — in 25 minutes.

Overall, Gonzaga forced 17 turnovers and scored 21 points off of them. The Bulldogs also won the rebounding battle, 38-27, with Hollingsworth's team-high 12 boards. The Zags had 21 assists compared to their eight turnovers on the day, with Kayleigh Truong dishing out six.

Notes: Eliza Hollingsworth's double double is her third this season. She has scored double figures in back-to-back games as she recorded 21 at Rice on Dec. 9.

With Yvonne Ejim's 16 points, she currently has scored in double digits for 18-straight games, dating back to last season.

Gonzaga has won 25-straight home games, which is ranked third in the nation.
Up Next: Gonzaga travels to Phoenix, Ariz., this Wednesday, Dec. 20, to play Arizona in the Jerry Colangelo Classic. The game is set for 1:30 p.m. Pacific Time. Live stats can be found at GoZags.com while the game is televised on the Pac-12 Network.
