Box Score LUBBOCK, Texas — Gonzaga baseball couldn't find its offensive rhythm until late in its second matchup with No. 24 Texas Tech on Sunday, ultimately falling 10-3 to the Red Raiders (2-0) at Rip Griffin Park.
Five different Zags — Brian Kalmer, Cade McGee, Brock Bozett, Enzo Apodaca and Dylan Johnson — picked up a hit each to round out GU's offense, with McGee (1 RBI) and Kalmer (2 RBI) driving in the Bulldogs' three runs. So far this weekend, Kalmer has driven in four runs in just six at-bats.
RHP Nate Deschryver went three frames in the first start and appearance of his GU career, striking out four and only allowing three earned runs on two hits but walking seven. RHP Jack Moffit (3 IP, 2 K) and Nate Weeldreyer (2 IP, 4 K) closed out the rest of the game.
Sunday's Game Three is set for an 11 a.m. PT start, with the series finale on Monday set for 9 a.m.
The Action
TTU Starter Mason Molina (5 IP, 7 K, 1 H, 0 ER) stifled GU's lineup through the first go-round, with Bozett as the only Zag to reach base in the first three innings on a second-frame single before being picked off at second. Texas Tech only managed a pair of hits in the same span, but six Red Raider batters drew walks off of Deschryver to put some pressure on the Zags' defense.
Tech finally made Deschryver pay for the free passes with a pair of runs in the fourth to break the stalemate — an RBI double from Austin Green that narrowly avoided Dylan Johnson's glove in right field and a wild pitch that gave Kevin Bazzell time to reach home — before Apodaca corralled a deep fly ball in the wind to strand three runners on base.
Moffitt took the mound in relief after Deschryver walked his eighth batter of the day in the fourth, making his GU debut on the mound. Tech put up two more runs on a pair of sacrifice knocks before a grounder got the Zags out of the frame with the deficit doubled.
GU got a runner in scoring position for the first time of the game in response, with Connor Coballes drawing a walk and stealing second with Johnson up to bat and two outs on the board. Johnson drew the second walk of the frame and Coballes stole third in the ensuing at-bat to pose the first real threat to plate a run, but Ezra Samperi struck out swinging to keep the Zags off the board.
Moffitt managed to hold Tech hitless with the order set to turn over in the top of the sixth to give the Zags some momentum, but RHP Taber Fast took over for Molina on the mound, proceeding to induce a grounder from Apodaca and striking out Savier Pinales and McGee in succession. Tech exploded for five runs the next frame to cement their lead, but after a scoreless seventh, cued by Weeldreyer's entry into the game, the Zags found some traction on the base paths.
Johnson got things started with a one-out single, and Apodaca doubled to push him to third after Samperi struck out to leave little room for error. McGee provided the RBI with a single up the middle that finally got GU onto the scoreboard, and Kalmer followed with an RBI single of his own to bring in two more runs — his fifth RBI in just six at-bats so far this weekend. Tech pushed the lead back to seven after an RBI single from Tracer Lopez in the bottom of the frame, and the Bulldogs went three-and-out to close the ninth and end the game.
