WTEN: Gonzaga Falls to Boise State, 4-3

The Zags return home to play Idaho on March 4

SPOKANE, Wash. --  Earlier this afternoon, the Gonzaga women's tennis team had a nonconference dual match against Boise State. Today's match marks the second consecutive season the Zags have faced the Broncos before beginning conference play.

Opening with a competitive doubles competition, Gonzaga battled against a talented Boise State squad. In the No.3 spot, Boise State's Shauna Hefferman and Pauline Ernstberger defeated Gonzaga's Jenna Sloan and Rose Hayes by a score of 6-3. Today's loss marks the first time Sloan and Hayes have paired for doubles this spring season. The doubles point was clinched for Boise State when Joana Baptista and Holly Stewart earned a 6-3 court two victory over Gonzaga's Kianna Oda and Tiegan Aitken.

With the doubles point already clinched for the Broncos, the court one match between Gonzaga's Cate Broerman and Adrianna Sosnowska and Boise State's Nicole Discenza and Lorelyz Marruffo went unfinished, ending with a score of 4-4. This is the second time this season that a doubles match including Broerman and Sosnowska went unfinished, with the only other unfinished match occurring in Gonzaga's victory over North Dakota.

Gonzaga showed grit and determination as the match transitioned to the singles competition. On court three, Stewart defeated Sloan by a score of 6-1, 6-2. Shortly after, Sosnowska earned Gonzaga their first team point of the day when she claimed a 6-1, 6-4 win over Marruffo. Sosnowska's victory improves her singles record to 4-3 this season. In the No.4 spot, Oda battled, but fell to Baptista by a score of 7-5, 6-2.

Gonzaga kept the competition close, earning their second team point when Aitken claimed a 6-4, 6-1 court five victory over Boise State's Bhakti Shah. On court one, Boise State clinched the team victory when Ernstberger defeated Broerman by a score of 4-6, 6-3, 6-2. In the final singles match of the day, Hayes earned an impressive 6-4, 6-7, 7-5 victory over Hefferman on court six.

Up Next: The Gonzaga women's team will stay in Spokane following today's match, as the Zags are scheduled to face the University of Idaho on March 4 at 11 a.m. Today's match also marks the first of four straight home matches, as the Zags will close nonconference play by traveling to Louisiana between March 14 and 18.
