SPOKANE, Wash. -- Earlier this afternoon, the Gonzaga women's tennis team faced Montana State in a nonconference dual match. This is the third consecutive season the Zags have hosted the Bobcats, with the past two meetings ending in victories for Gonzaga.
Gonzaga shined as the match opened with the doubles competition. In the No.1 spot, Gonzaga's
Adrianna Sosnowska and
Cate Broerman earned a 6-3 victory over Montana State's Marta Garcia-Reboredo and Mirte Van Baelen. Gonzaga clinched the doubles point when
Jenna Sloan and
Tiegan Aitken defeated Montana State's JJ Chen and Felicia Jayasaputra by a score of 6-3 on court three.
As Gonzaga had already clinched the doubles point, the court two match between Gonzaga's
Kianna Oda and
Rose Hayes and Montana State's Izabela Heinzova and Andrea Cuquerella went unfinished, ending with a score of 5-4.
Gonzaga remained dominant as the singles competition began. On court three, Oda earned her fifth singles victory of the season when she defeated Baelen by a score of 6-2, 6-1. Shortly after, Sosnowska battled back from being down 4-1 in the second set, taking her match against Heinzova 6-3, 7-5. The Zags clinched the team victory when Sloan earned a 6-3, 6-1 win against Jayasaputra.
In the No.1 spot, Broerman earned Gonzaga another team point when she defeated Garcia-Reboredo by a score of 6-2, 6-3. On court five, Hayes clinched a 7-5, 6-1 victory over Chen. With today's win, Hayes' singles record improves to an impressive 7-2 this season. In the final singles match of the day, Montana State's Abby Ritters defeated Gonzaga's
Maria Frampton by a score of 6-3, 7-5 on court six.
Up Next: Following today's victory, the Gonzaga women's tennis team open a five-game road trip, starting with a match against Southeastern Louisiana on March 14 at 12 p.m. The Zags will begin conference play on March 24 against BYU, and are scheduled to return to the Stevens Center on March 29 to face Santa Clara.
