SPOKANE, Wash. -- Gonzaga men's and women's track tallied seven event wins at the Sam Adams Classic at the Pine Bowl at Whitworth University on Saturday, highlighted by dominant showings from
Jasmine Nguyen in the women's 3K and
Wil Smith in the men's 5K.
The Zag women continued their early-winning ways after a successful trip to San Francisco last weekend for the WCCAA Meet, with Nguyen,
Kate Donaldson,
Alicia Anderson and
Ellie Armbruster all coming away as victors for the Zags in their first meet back in Spokane.Â
The Zag men, competing in their first meet of the 2023 outdoor season, picked up a trio of wins from
Cullen McEachern,
Carp Mukai and Smith in distance races.Â
Nguyen began the meet running 10:26.97 in the women's 3,000-meters to lead four Zags in the top four placings, with
Jillian Greene (10:30.45, 2nd),
Georgi Brady (10:31.44, 3rd) and
Emily Phelps (10:48.19, 4th) to follow.Â
Donaldson cruised to an easy win in the women's 2,000 steeplechase, running 7:31.04.Â
McEachern got things going for the men in the 2,000 steeplechase, running a time of 5:47 for the win. Trailing him were
Cooper Laird (),
Jaxon Mackie () and
Paul Talens () to complete a top four sweep for the Zags.Â
Anderson led a 1-3 sweep for the Zags in the women's 1,500, running 4:30.37 for the win.
Brittney Hansen (4:37.32) and
Jorun Downing (4:44.65) finished second and third, respectively.
Makenna Edwards (4:48.52, 5th),
Lucy Klebeck (4:51.31, 6th),
Tate Beasley (4:59.59, 7th) and
Kate Ferrell (5:23.01, 8th) completed top-10 finishes.Â
Mukai ran 3:54.97 to win the men's 1,500, with
Aidan Baughan finishing third in 3:58.52 and
James Powers finishing seventh in 4:14.81.Â
Armbruster picked up her second individual win of the season, winning the women's 800 in 2:15.66. Anderson (2:19.48) and Hansen (2:20.54) earned another pair of top three finishes, placing second and third, respectively.
Elizabeth Brands placed fifth in 2:23.45.Â
Smith clocked a winning time of 14:23.12 in the men's 5,000 to lead seven Zags to finish in the top 10.
Bryce Cerkowniak (14:29.26, 2nd) and
Ansel Tucker (14:40.06, 4th) cracked the top five, while
Jackson Lyne (14:49.34, 6th),
Riley Moore (14:50.59, 7th),
Nicky DiMartino (14:59.03, 8th) and
Will Thorsett (15:13.53, 9th) rounded out the Zags' field.Â
Alexis Knight earned a pair of fifth place finishes in the women's 100 and 200, running 12.99 and 27.25.
Grace Dalton finished seventh in the 100 (13.61) and eighth in the 200 (28.01).
Taylor Biondi finished second in the women's 400, running 1:03.54, with
Leighton Joy (1:03.78, 3rd) and Ashlinn Aguayo (1:05.94, 4th) earning top five placings. Joy was also 11th in the 200 (28.73), while Biondi was 13th (29.47).Â
