Box Score LOS ANGELES – A shutdown complete-game outing on the mound from LMU ace Diego Barrera and an early three-spot proved too much for Gonzaga Baseball to overcome in its West Coast Conference series opener on Friday night at Page Stadium, with the Bulldogs (12-18, 8-5 WCC) falling 4-0 to the first-place Lions (18-14, 11-2).
The Zags have a chance to tie up a crucial conference series in game two on Saturday, set for a 6 p.m. start.
Barrera struck out 10 and held the Bulldogs scoreless on five hits for his sixth win of the season, stalling GU's momentum despite a solid bounceback from Wild after the Lions plated three quick runs in the bottom of the first. Wild held LMU to just one run through the rest of his seven-inning start, striking out five while being tagged for seven hits and two walks, but GU's bats couldn't string together enough production to get on the board. RHP
Kai Francis took over for a final inning relief, striking out two while holding the Lions hitless despite a pair of walks.
Brock Bozett finished with two hits – a single and a double – to pace GU's lineup, with
Brian Kalmer adding a double of his own and
Grayson Sterling and
Donovan Ratfield adding a base knock each.
