TORRANCE, Calif. -- James Mwaura put down a probable NCAA West Preliminary qualifying time to highlight Day One for Gonzaga Track at the Mt. SAC Relays and Bryan Clay Invitational, making it three consecutive seasons that Mwaura will qualify. The feat would be a first by a Zag runner.
In his first outdoor track race since last June, Mwaura's 28:39.50 time at Helmer Stadium in the first heat of the Men's 10,000m was good for third overall and ranks among the Top 20 times among NCAA West runners along with
Wil Smith's 28:24.03 time from the Stanford Invite. Mwaura's probable back-to-back-to-back qualifications come a season after he became the first GU runner to earn All-American honors on the outdoor oval in consecutive seasons. Mwaura holds the GU program records in the 10,000m (27:50.44) and 5,000m (13:30.02).
In other action over in Azusa,
Jaxon Mackie finished 48th overall in the 3K steeplechase with a 9:01.19 finish that makes it his second consecutive multi-second PR in the event after putting down a 9:06.50 time at the Stanford Invite March 31.
Gonzaga returns to competition for Day Two at the Bryan Clay Invite today, set for competition in the men's and women's 5K as well as the women's 1500m and 800m races. Live results and streaming options are available on GoZags.com — follow @ZagRunning on Instagram and Twitter for live updates, highlights and more.
