STANFORD, Calif. – James Mwaura put down an NCAA qualifying time for the second consecutive week to highlight Gonzaga's first day at the Payton Jordan Invitational at Stanford University on Friday night, with
Kyle Radosevich recording a new personal best in the men's 10,000M to lead four other runners finishing in the overall Top 10 of their respective events.
A trio of Men's Steeple runners opened things up for the Zags, with
Cullen McEachern winning heat two with an 8:48.49 finish ahead of
Cooper Laird (third, 8:55.98) and
Jaxon Mackie (fifth, 9:02.41). McEachern closed with his two fastest laps of the race over the last 800m, putting down 69.95 and 65.38 splits respectively.
Up next,
Kristen Garcia finished 17th in the first heat of the Women's 5,000M race, putting down a 16:33.04 time.
James Mwaura made a splash with another probable NCAA qualifying time in the Men's 5,000M – the second consecutive week he's put down a time that will get him to NCAA Prelims after recording a probable qualifying time in the 10,000M at the Mt. SAC Relays. His 13:32.89 finish would rank as the second-fastest in program history if he didn't already hold the record with a 13:30.02 finish at the Oregon Relays last season. Mwaura passed four runners over his last lap to finish eighth in his heat, recording his fastest-ever closing 400 meters (59.21) in the process. Mwaura's probable back-to-back-to-back qualifications come a season after he became the first GU runner to earn All-American honors on the outdoor oval in consecutive seasons. Mwaura holds the GU program records in the 10,000m (27:50.44) and 5,000m (13:30.02).
Mwaura's finish ranks No. 19 amongst NCAA D-I runners as of Friday.
Kyle Radosevich closed out the Zags' Day One with a personal best in the Men's 10,000M, crossing the finish line in 29:26.15 to place 10th overall in a stacked field that included four international competitors and solidify his hold on the No. 4 spot on the program's all-time Top 10 list.
