SPOKANE, Wash. – Gonzaga Baseball fell behind early and couldn't keep pace with a 15-hit outing from San Diego in Saturday's West Coast Conference rubber match at Patterson Baseball Complex, with the Toreros winning 9-3 to clinch a series win.
The loss snaps a streak of 12 consecutive WCC series wins for the Bulldogs (12-16, 8-4 WCC) dating back to last season. As of Saturday, they sit in second place in the league standings behind Loyola Marymount (16-12, 9-2).
The Toreros (14-15-1, 7-5) jumped on RHP
Nathan Deschryver for three quick runs in the top of the first, but the redshirt freshman righty calmed things down for three scoreless frames before a two-spot in the fifth cued LHP
Bradley Mullan's entry into the game in relief. Deschryver finished with five strikeouts and three walks. Mullan was tagged for two runs on six hits over the next 2 ⅔ innings, and RHP
Jack Moffitt threw the final 1 ⅔, allowing two runs – one earned – while adding three punchouts.
The Zags picked up ten hits of their own but were held to three runs, with
Connor Coballes leading the lineup with a two-hit outing for the second game in a row.
Donovan Ratfield and
Savier Pinales both scored one run and drove in another, with Ratfield slamming his third home run of the season in the bottom of the seventh to get GU within four.
Sam Stem added two knocks of his own along with a run.
