EUGENE, Ore. – Gonzaga Men's Track concluded the Oregon Twilight Meet Friday night at Hayward Field with an electric event win and meet record from
Wil Smith in the 5,000M, with four other Zags cracking the Top 10 in the 3,000M Steeplechase and 5,000M, respectively.
Opening things up in the men's 3,000M Steeplechase,
Cooper Laird finished third overall with a 8:54.69 time – including the second-fastest closing lap of the race (1:06.81) – and
Jaxon Mackie followed with a seventh-place finish (9:11.46).
Wil Smith exploded late for a meet record and event win in the 5,000M, surging ahead to beat out all other competitors by more than two seconds with a 13:43.30 time that shattered the previous meet record of 14:08.89. Smith's finish would rank as the second-fastest time in history if he hadn't already secured the No. 2 spot on the program all-time list with a PR at the Bryan Clay Invite on April 14 (13:40.40).
Riley Moore and
Kyle Radosevich rounded out the Zags' outing in the 5,000M "B" Section, placing sixth and eighth respectively. Moore crossed the finish line in 14:17.10, with Radosevich finishing in 14:26.80.
