COLFAX, Wash. – The Gonzaga cross country teams traveled to Colfax Golf Club for the 2023 Cougar Classic, where the women took second and the men took third place.
Ansel Tucker (ninth, 24:37.6) led the Zag men in the 8K race, and
Anna Grabowski (sixth, 21:35.9) paced three GU Top-10 finishes in the women's 6K.
THE WOMEN
In her second race of the 2023 season, Grabowski once again placed sixth individually and was one of three Zag women to finish in the Top-10.
Lucy Klebeck finished just over a half-second behind Grabowski, taking seventh place with a time of 21:36.7.
Maria Taggi placed ninth, crossing the finish line in 21:47.6 in her second-ever race with Gonzaga.
GU took spots 11 through 13, as
Kate Donaldson (21:55.0),
Anika Jones (22:14.8) and
Olivia Ferraro (22:16.6) finished in succession, with Donaldson and Jones rounding out the point-scoring.
Jorun Downing (16th, 22:26.7) and
Olivia Hobbs (18th, 22:37.6) both secured Top-20 finishes.
Camille Broadbent,
Elizabeth Brands, and
Paige Trautman were the next Zag runners to finish, as Broadbent (23:14.4) took 23rd, Brands (23:14.6) took 24th, and Trautman (23:18.0) took 25th. The trio of
Kate Ferrell (31st, 23:52.1),
Catherine Vlach (32nd, 24:04.6), and
Tate Beasley (33rd, 24:06.7) completed the lineup for Gonzaga at the event.
Washington State captured the team title with 30 points after securing four of the top five individual placements. The Cougs' Neema Kimtai crossed the finish line with a winning time of 20:33.8 to lead the field.
THE MEN
The Zag men secured a third place team finish in the first race of the afternoon, scoring 62 team points behind Washington State's 18 and Idaho's 58.
Ansel Tucker led the way for GU with a ninth place finish, finishing in 24:37.6 for his third-career Top-10 8K finish.
Nicky DiMartino finished 12th with a time of 24:51.9 and
Aidan Baughan finished 14th with a time of 24:56.0.
Will Thorsett rounded out the Zags' Top-20 finishes, placing 16th with a time of 24:59.1.
Caleb Richardson's 27th place finish (25:24.8) completed Gonzaga's point scoring efforts.
Luke Alfonso (29th, 25:29.2) and
Nick Braz (30th, 25:35.4) notched Top-30 placements in their second races of the season.
Charles Martinez (36th, 25:55.1),
Carp Mukai (37th, 25:56.9),
Jacob Alfonso (38th, 25:58.2), and
Mason Kissell (39th, 26:01.3) were the next Zag runners to finish in the top half of the individual field.
Tommy O'Neil (44th, 26:07.2),
Sam Geiger (49th, 26:23.6), and
James Powers (71st, 27:59.7) completed Gonzaga's lineup of attached runners for the meet.
Washington State captured the team title, led by Brian Barsaiya's winning time of 23:41.3. Barsaiya was one of five Coug runners to finish in the Top-10.
UP NEXT
The Gonzaga men's squad heads to Minneapolis, Minn. next for the 37th Annual Roy Griak Invitational on Friday, Sept. 22. The meet is hosted by Minnesota and will be run at Les Bolstad Golf Course in St. Paul. The women are in action next at the Lakefront Invite in two weeks in Chicago Ill. on Sept. 29.
