SPOKANE, Wash. – After a scoreless first half, Gonzaga women's soccer and Washington State combined for seven goals in the second half in a 4-3 win for the Bulldogs at Luger Field Saturday.
The Zags (6-6-2, 2-2-1 West Coast Conference) led 4-1 with less than five minutes left in regulation, before WSU scored a pair of goals in a late comeback attempt. After only a combined nine shots in the opening 45 minutes, the teams had 15 in the second half.
The Cougars (5-5-5, 2-2-2 WCC) outshot GU 15-9 in the match and had 53 percent of the possession, but Gonzaga had 7-6 edge in shots on goal and took seven of the game's 11 corner kicks. The Bulldogs'
Emelia Warta scored a goal and had two assists, while
Amelia Severn had a goal and an assist.
Warta opened the scoring in the 55
th minute kicking in a header from
Paige Alexander off a Severn corner kick. Less than two minutes later, Lindsey Turner scored her third goal of the season for the Cougars. Reagan Kotschau and Megan Santa Cruz were credited with assists.
In the 72
nd minute, GU's
Chelsea Le converted on a penalty kick for her fourth goal of the season. Warta had back-to-back assists on the Bulldogs' next two goals, a Severn score in the 83
rd minute and a
Katelyn Rigg goal in the 86
th minute.
Washington State's Reese Tappan scored on a penalty kick in the 87
th minute, and then Grayson Lynch finished the scoring in the 89
th minute with assists to Maggie Mace and Kendall Campbell.
The Zags'
Michaela McCollum and WSU's Nadia Cooper both finished with three saves.
Gonzaga travels to the Bay Area for games at San Francisco (4-7-2, 0-3-2) and No. 7 Santa Clara (10-2-2, 4-0-1) Thursday and Sunday. Thursday's match at USF will be broadcast on ESPN Plus at 6 p.m., with live stats on GoZags.com.
