SPOKANE, Wash. – The Gonzaga women's basketball team hosted Cal on Thursday night and dropped to the Golden Bears, 86-65.
Both
Yvonne Ejim and
Allie Turner reached 20 plus points in the game. Turner recorded 20 points in her first career start as a freshman while Ejim led the Zags with 27.
At the end of the first quarter, GU trailed 26-17. Bettencourt had a team-high seven points as the Zags shot at 60% from beyond the arc and 40% overall. Cal started out hot with a 68.8% shooting performance and forced four turnovers.
The Bears outscored GU in the second quarter, 18-14, as Kayla Williams scored 12. Gonzaga was led by Ejim with eight points. She went 2-for-2 from the floor and 4-for-6 from the free throw line to cut Gonzaga's deficit to 44-31 at the half.
Going into the fourth quarter, the Bulldogs trailed 67-48. Turner scored eight points for GU in the third frame was the team shot 42.9% from the floor compared to Cal's 66.7%.
Ejim led the way in the final quarter with 11 points. She finished the game going 10-for-13 from the charity stripe and 8-for-12 from the floor, including a three pointer.
Gonzaga won the rebound battle, 33-24, with
Maud Huijbens grabbing a team-high of nine and four assists. Ejim was right behind her with eight rebounds as she also had two assists. The Zags were plagued by turnovers as Cal forced 24 in the game.
Turner finished the night going 4-for-6 from the three-point line in her first start as a freshman. She went 7-for-12 overall and made both her free throws.

Ejim currently has 1,715 career points and is 450 points away from breaking the all-time scoring record. She now sits at fourth of all-time at Gonzaga in scoring, passing Ivy Safranski (1,702 points, 1991-95) and Jessica Malone (1,703 points, 1998-2002).
