SPOKANE, Wash. – Gonzaga volleyball head coach
Katie Wilson announced the signing of Mia Clyburn, Karsyn Fetzer, and Hazel Murphy on Thursday. Fester and Murphy, a pair of outside hitters, and Clyburn, a middle blocker, are set to join the Zags for the 2025 season.
Mia Clyburn | Middle Blocker | Fort Mill, S.C. | Nation Ford HS
Clyburn signs with Gonzaga amidst her senior season at Nation Ford, where she has already collected two All-5A Region 3 honors and one All-State honor for the Falcons over three seasons. This year, Clyburn is captaining a 40-3 Nation Ford team into the 5A playoffs after a perfect 12-0 Region 3 record. During her career, Clyburn has compiled 574 kills, including a career-high 248 this season on a team-leading .355 hitting percentage. She also leads the Falcons this season with 79 total blocks and is fourth in service aces with 53, bringing her career totals to 235 and 86, respectively. Off the court, Clyburn was named to the 2024 Academic All-American Team and All-Scholar-Athlete Team.
"I chose Gonzaga because of the people," Clyburn said. "When I first connected with Coach Katie I could automatically tell that she was a passionate and kind person who was determined to help me and the rest of the athletes achieve our goals. It's the people that drew me in and helped me make this wonderful decision."
Wilson on Clyburn: "Mia has the potential to become an elite middle at the college level. She is quick off the ground and she moves well laterally," Wilson said. "Mia is a terminal attacker. I love the fire and energy she brings to the court."
Karsyn Fetzer | Outside Hitter | Kersey, Colo. | Platte Valley HS
Fetzer, a career .360 hitter for Platte Valley with 1610 career kills, signs with Gonzaga as the 20-3 Broncos push through the Class 3A Region 1 playoffs after a 12-0 Patriot League record this season. Throughout her career at Platte Valley, Fetzer has notched 1292 digs, 220 service aces, and 161 total blocks. This season, Fetzer is leading the Broncos in kills per set (5.0), hitting percentage (.406), aces (47), kills (382), and digs (307). The senior is a three-time First Team All-Conference recipient and is on the AVCA's All-America watch list for the 2024 season. In addition, Fetzer was named Second Team All-State her freshman season, First Team All-State her sophomore season, and is the reigning 3A Player of the Year. In the classroom, Fetzer is a First Team Academic All-State honoree and a member of the PVHS National Honor Society.
"I chose Gonzaga because it felt like home when I visited," Fetzer said. "The coaching staff is amazing; they have big hearts and care so much about this program and the girls in it. I am so blessed that God gave me an opportunity to be a Zag!"
Wilson on Fetzer: "From the moment I watched Karsyn play, I knew I wanted to coach her. She is a fierce competitor," Wilson said. "She finds a way to score. The joy she brings to the court each and every match makes her teammates around her better. You can immediately tell she will do everything she can to win."
Hazel Murphy | Outside Hitter | Ellensburg, Wash. | Ellensburg HS
Murphy is an in-state signee out of Ellensburg and four-year letterwinner for the Bulldogs, earning First Team All-CWAC in back-to-back seasons in 2023 and 2024. This year, Ellensburg is coming off a District 5 Championship and will look towards the WIAA 2A State Tournament as the top-ranked squad in the RPI with a 16-2 record. The senior outside hitter holds a 4.0 GPA and was a member of the Ellensburg Honor Roll all four years while participating in the National Honor Society for two years. Her parents are Central Washington University multi-sport alumni and she is the oldest of four.
"I chose Gonzaga because it felt like the right fit," Murphy said. "When we walked around campus, it felt like somewhere I could see myself, like this was where I belonged. I really like the coaching staff and the program is doing big things that I want to be a part of. It is somewhere that I will get to compete and grow, which were two major requirements I was looking for in a college program."
Wilson on Murphy: "Hazel is a mindful learner who changes quickly," Wilson said. "She attended camp here at Gonzaga and by the end of the first day she had improved in every area of her game. At that moment I knew she needed to be a part of our program. Hazel has a burning desire to be great in every area of her life. I am excited for her future development."
