SAN DIEGO, Calif. – After a nail-biting series opener on Friday, San Diego made an offensive statement on Saturday at Fowler Park to defeat Gonzaga 14-2 and secure the series win, taking over sole possession of first place in the West Coast Conference.
San Diego (29-12, 13-4 WCC) took advantage of some Gonzaga (17-22, 12-5 WCC) miscues early in game two. Only four of their 14 runs were earned on the night.
After leaving the bases loaded in the first, San Diego struck for four runs in the second inning. A GU error, safety squeeze bunt, RBI single, and a bases-loaded walk accounted for the Toreros run production.
The Zags got one back in the fourth after a sacrifice fly from Jordan Hamberg, but San Diego would eventually find their way to nine runs in the bottom of the fifth to put the game out of reach. Eight of their nine runs were marked unearned, all coming with two outs in the inning.
Hamberg picked up another RBI in the sixth with a two-out RBI single, but Gonzaga had more work to do, still trailing 13-2. The Toreros would add one more in the eighth inning to round out the scoring.
Liam Paddack (L, 3-5) was the starter of record for the Zags, pitching four innings while allowing just three earned runs on four hits and three strikeouts. San Diego took advantage of five walks and three hit batsmen.
