EUGENE, Ore. – On a cooler and rainy evening at Hayward Field, the home of the 2024 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships, Gonzaga earned a pair of wins at the Oregon Twilight meet on Friday.
Tommy O'Neil and
Sam Geiger each placed first in their events in two exciting finishes on a night where athletes were searching for NCAA West Prelim qualifying times.
Kristen Garcia kicked things of for Gonzaga in the women's 1500m, running a 4:27.62.
Tommy O'Neil, despite not earning a PR in the men's 1500-meter race, earned an early-heat win with an impressive final 200 meters to snag the victory in 3:50.99.
Alicia Anderson would take her turn in the performance heat later in the evening, running a time of 4:23.14.
In an evening downpour at Hayward Field,
Sam Geiger improved his 800-meter PR with a 1:50.26 finish, a time that is second-fastest in program history and the fastest overall in the early heats.
Ellie Armbruster took to the track in the performance portion of the women's 800m, running yet another sub-2:10 but just missing a PR.
In the women's steeplechase,
Kate Donaldson ran a 10:56.30 PR that improved her program fifth-fastest steeple time. In the men's section that wrapped up Gonzaga's night,
Paul Talens,
Cooper Laird, and
Sean Janecko went toe-to-toe in their steeple heat as Laird finished in 8:50.07, Talens in 9:02.28, and Janecko in 9:08.04 for a new PR.

The Zag women will get one more chance to race in Spokane, heading back up to Whitworth for their Last Chance Meet on Wednesday. Both squads will head to Lewis & Clark College for the Portland Distance Carnival on May 11 in their final opportunities to earn a qualifying mark for the NCAA West Prelims in Fayetteville, Ark.
