SPOKANE, Wash. – Gonzaga men's and women's cross country have released their schedule for the 2024 season, head coaches Pat Tyson and Jake Stewart announced on Wednesday.
The men will look to defend their first-ever West Coast Conference Championship and earn their fifth-straight bid to the NCAA Championships, while the women seek their first WCC Title and NCAA Championships bid since accomplishing both feats in 2015.
Rosina Machu returns for her third season after earning the WCC individual crown and finishing as an All-American in 2023, hoping to lead the Bulldog women to the final weekend of the season in late November.
As it has every season since 2010 (excluding 2020's hiatus), the Zags will kick off their season at the Clash of the Inland Northwest at Cheney's Eastern Washington campus on Aug. 30. Since 2016, Gonzaga has combined for ten team titles and nine individual titles at the meet. The men have won the previous seven team titles while picking up six of seven individual wins. The women have won three of the past four, earning two individual wins along the way.
The next two meets on the 2024 slate will give the Zags a sneak peek into the upcoming Regional and National meets later on in the season. First, they will travel to the Cougar Classic in Colfax, Wash., on Sept. 13, the host course of the NCAA West Regional Championships. Next, they will travel to Madison, Wisc., on Sept. 27 for the Nuttycombe Invitational, the host course for this year's NCAA Championships.
On Oct. 5, a quick trip to Walla Walla pits the Bulldogs at the Whitman Invitational, the second-straight appearance for the men and first-ever for the women. Last season, the men took home the team title with a near leaderboard sweep.
The two teams will then split as the men travel to the Bill Dellinger Invitational in Springfield, Ore., on Oct. 11 before the women compete in the Arturo Barrios Invitational in College Station, Texas, on Oct. 12. In their last appearance at the Bill Dellinger Invitational, the men placed second behind a top three finish from Yacine Guermali in 2021. The women will return to College Station for just the second-ever time and first since 2019 when they placed seventh as a team.
Similar to their season-opening meet at the Clash of the Inland Northwest, both teams will continue their tradition at the Inland Empire Classic in Lewiston, Idaho, on Oct. 19. Making their 13th straight appearance, the teams have combined for eight team titles and three individual titles since 2011. Following that short trip, the teams will conclude the 2024 regular season at the Sasquatch Invite. The date for that meet is still to be determined, however it will take place in the final week of October.
Pacific will host this season's West Coast Conference Championships on Nov. 2 in Stockton, Calif., as the men seek back-to-back team titles, and the women look to pick up their first since 2015. Machu will also hope to defend the WCC crown this season after dominating last year in Malibu, Calif.
The NCAA West Regional Championships will take place on Nov. 13 back in Colfax for the first time since 2019. Last season in Sacramento, the men stole an automatic bid while upsetting multiple nationally ranked teams. Eight days later, the Zags will hope to return to Madison for the NCAA Championships as hosted by Wisconsin.
