CORVALLIS, Ore. – Oregon State picked up a 4-2-win over Gonzaga women's soccer in the West Coast Conference season-opener for both teams at Paul Lorenz Field Saturday.
The Beavers, (3-6-0, 1-0-0 West Coast Conference) playing in their first game as a WCC member, surrendered the first goal, but scored the next four to pull away from GU.
The Zags (4-5-1, 0-1-0 WCC) outshot OSU 21-13, including 5-4 in shots on goal, and possessed the ball for 51 percent of the match. The Bulldogs also had an 8-5 advantage in corner kicks.
Gonzaga's
Amelia Severn scored her third goal in the last two games in the 19
th minute.
Paige Alexander was credited with her third assist of the season, and the sixth in her career.
Hayden Wilson evened the score in the 32
nd minute for Oregon State, off an assist from Claire Jones. A pair of own goals followed in the 40
th and 49
th minutes to give the Beavers a 3-1 lead. OSU's Katie Godden then scored her first goal of the season on a penalty kick in the 52
nd minute.
Alexander found the back of the net for the second time this season in the 68
th minute.
Erin Ewers recorded the assist. Alexander finished with a match-high eight shots.
Mya Sanchez made three saves in the Oregon State net, while
Lauren Towne had two saves for GU.
