Zags Beat LMU for Third Straight Shutout Win

Severn scores a goal and records an assist for third consecutive game

SPOKANE, Wash. – Gonzaga continued its strong start to conference play with a 3-0 victory over Loyola Marymount at Luger Field on Wednesday.

The Zags (5-7-1, 3-1-0 West Coast Conference) won their third straight game — all by shutout — and have outscored their first four league foes 9-1. The lone opponent goal came from Saint Mary's in the 90th minute of a 1-0 loss to open WCC play on Sept. 24. Since that setback, GU has yet to trail in a match and has outshot its opponents 53-21.

In Wednesday's win, the Bulldogs' Amelia Severn scored a goal and recorded an assist for the third consecutive contest. She now ranks third in the conference in goals (5), assists (4) and points (14). The sophomore is one assist shy of entering the program's career top-10 list, with 11 in her 31 career appearances.

In the win over LMU (5-4-1, 2-2-0 WCC), Severn opened the scoring in the 27th minute by converting a penalty kick. She then assisted on Katelyn Rigg's goal in the 33rd minute. Both Rigg and Severn have scored five goals this season. Rigg ranks third in the conference with 33 shots and has 33 career points.

Rigg and Olivia Lester then connected with Emily Todd in the 55th minute. Todd's second goal of the season came off Rigg's second assist of the year and Lester's first career assist.

Over the three-match shutout streak posted by the GU defense, goalkeeper Michaela McCollum has faced nine shots and stopped them all. She finished with four saves against LMU. JJ Hoover made 13 saves for the Lions.

Gonzaga outshot LMU 21-12, including a 16-5 advantage in shots on goal. The Bulldogs also held a 9-5 edge in corner kicks and maintained 59 percent of possession.

The Zags travel to Pepperdine (7-4-1, 4-0-0) on Saturday at 12 p.m. The Waves remained unbeaten in league play with a 1-0 victory at Santa Clara on Wednesday. Saturday's match will stream on ESPN+, with live stats available on GoZags.com.
