BOSTON- The Track and Field season got off to a flying start for the Gonzaga Bulldogs as GU Women ran the three fastest 5k times in program history on Saturday.
Rosina Machu opened the season by setting a new program record in the 5k, running a blistering time of 15:21.19. Machu cut over 15 seconds off of her previous program record, becoming the first Zag woman to ever go under fifteen and a half minutes in the event. Machu, a first team All-American in the 10k in outdoor track last season, is already setting national expectations high for her senior year by setting a new distance record in the first meet of the season.
The record breaking day was continued by Logan Hofstee, who ran the second fastest 5k in program history, finishing in 15:43.03. She was joined by Jessica Frydenlund, who finished in 15:55.74, setting the third fastest mark in program history. All three runners became the first three women in GU history to run a sub sixteen minute 5k in indoor track.
The men's track and field team also impressed in the 5k, as Logan Law ran the fifth fastest time in program history, running a time of 13:59.48. Bryce Cerkowniak followed closely behind, running the seventh fastest 5k in men's program history at 14:06.54. Hayden Roberts ran a personal best in the mile, taking 25th overall in a competitive field with a time of 4 minutes and 8 seconds. Â
Gonzaga will return to Spokane next weekend, where they will run downtown at The Podium when they compete at the Spokane Invitational on December 13th.
