SPOKANE, Wash. – Gonzaga Volleyball Head Coach JT Wenger has announced the hiring of assistant coaches
McKenzie Brewer and
Klaire Mitchell.
"I am excited to add McKenzie and Klaire to the Gonzaga staff," Wenger said. "These two women each bring a wealth of knowledge about the game, and I know that our student-athletes will benefit immediately. Both McKenzie and Klaire love spending time in the gym developing volleyball players into the best versions they can become."
Brewer arrives at Gonzaga with coaching experience at various collegiate levels, most recently serving as an assistant coach for Wenger at UT Arlington in 2024. Prior to joining the UTA staff in 2024, Brewer spent two years as an assistant coach at Incarnate Word, also serving as the recruiting coordinator and working with liberos and setters.
"I'm incredibly grateful for the opportunity to join the staff at Gonzaga and to work with JT once again," Brewer said. "I've been really impressed by the University's culture and school spirit, and I'm excited to be a part of this new era for volleyball at GU."
A four-year player for Stephen F. Austin, Brewer shined as a freshman tallying 346 assists and a 7.86 assist per set average, ranking second in Ladyjacks history in total assists at the time. She went on to help SFA to their fifth NCAA Tournament appearance following her senior season where she averaged 4.51 assists with 10 or more in 32 of the team's 35 matches.
Originally from Grapevine TX, Brewer attended Southlake Carroll High School. After obtaining her degree at SFA, Brewer coached club in the Houston area before joining the Northwestern State staff as a Grad Assistant in 2021.
"McKenzie has displayed an ability to coach the game at a high level, connects with student athletes, and has a great eye for talent," Wenger said. "She will provide invaluable passion and perspective in teaching the game."
Mitchell, a Coeur d'Alene native, will join Wenger's staff in 2025 after an impressive five-year career at Grand Canyon where she was a three-time Western Athletic Conference Setter of the Year. Across those five seasons from 2019-2023, Mitchell earned four First Team All-WAC honors, one Second Team All-WAC honor, and was the 2019 WAC Freshman of the Year.
"First, I would like to thank Coach Wenger for giving me the opportunity to be on the coaching staff here at Gonzaga," Mitchell said. "Having the opportunity to coach at the highest level next to my hometown is a huge blessing and I am so excited for the future of Gonzaga Volleyball. Go Zags!"
While at GCU, Mitchell set and broke numerous program Division-I records for the Lopes, most notably becoming the all-time D1-era assist leader with 4,582 while setting the all-time single-season school record of 1,148 assists in 2023.
A 2019 graduate of Lake City High School, Mitchell returned to the Pacific Northwest in 2024, serving as an assistant coach for the Renovators Volleyball Club in Spokane. She will remain close to home as she begins her time on the GU coaching staff.
"Klaire shined as not only an athlete, but as a competitor," Wenger said. "I expect her transition into the coaching ranks to be very smooth, as she is cerebral and deliberate in her approach to the game."
