Women's Rowing Finish Wheeler Invite With Promising Results

Most boats will compete next at the WCC Championships

Raleigh, NC – Gonzaga women's rowing wrapped up a competitive weekend at the Lake Wheeler Invitational with determined performances across all varsity boats in the final round of racing on Saturday. Facing off against some of the top-ranked programs in the country, the Bulldogs showed grit, consistency, and a commitment to competing at a high level.

In the Varsity 8, Gonzaga finished 4th in a fast and highly competitive heat, posting a time of 6:30.431. Virginia took the top spot with a time of 6:18.619, followed by Duke (6:27.131) and Boston (6:28.481). The Zags maintained a strong pace and held off both Rhode Island and Villanova to close out their regatta with a solid showing in their top boat.

The Second Varsity 8 followed a similar pattern, as Gonzaga placed 4th in 6:51.779. Virginia again led the field at 6:30.957, with Duke (6:33.423) and Boston (6:41.961) rounding out the top three. The Zags stayed ahead of Villanova and Rhode Island, showing consistency and resilience in a tough draw.

One of the most exciting finishes of the day came from the Varsity 4, where Gonzaga finished 3rd in 7:29.477—just 0.092 seconds ahead of Boston in a thrilling sprint to the line. Virginia (7:20.019) and Duke (7:25.307) led the race, but Gonzaga's closing speed and composure allowed them to have the best finish of the day.

In the Second Varsity 4, the Bulldogs placed fourth with a time of 7:49.669. Duke won the race with a 7:22.523, followed by Virginia and Boston.

The Zags will have some boats compete next weekend at the Windermere Cup in Seattle before racing at the West Coast Conference Championships on May 16 and 17.
