SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Alex Bazia's 81st-minute strike lifted Gonzaga men's soccer to a 1-0 victory over Incarnate Word on Thursday night at Gayle & Tom Benson Stadium, giving first-year head coach Chris McGaughey his first career win at the helm of the Bulldogs.
After a scoreless first half, Gonzaga broke through late when Bazia slotted a low shot inside the left post for his first goal of the season. The finish capped a strong second-half push that saw the Zags outshoot the Cardinals, 5-4, after the break.
Chema Preciado anchored the back line with a three-save performance to record the clean sheet for GU. Morgan Olson and Geremi Onentia each registered shots on target, while Damoni McKenna-Greenawalt and Drew Pedersen added pressure in the attack.
Overall, Gonzaga finished with seven shots, including five on goal, while holding UIW to just four shots on target. The Bulldogs' defense held firm down the stretch, withstanding late pressure to secure the result.
The win moves Gonzaga to 1-1-1 on the year, while Incarnate Word falls to 1-2-0.
The Bulldogs continue their road trip on Sunday, Aug. 31, visiting Houston Christian. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m. PT in Houston.
