Men’s Soccer Falls 1-0 on the Road at Houston Christian

The Zags return home on Sept. 12

HOUSTON, Texas – Gonzaga men's soccer dropped a hard-fought 1-0 decision on the road Sunday evening at Houston Christian. The Bulldogs outshot the Huskies 11-13 and held a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks but were unable to find the back of the net.

The match remained scoreless through the first 78 minutes with both teams trading chances. Gonzaga generated six shots in the opening half, including three on target, but Houston Christian goalkeeper Alex Aitken came up with timely saves to keep the Bulldogs off the board.

The breakthrough came in the 80th minute when the Huskies converted a set piece. A free kick from Ben Thirkill found Joby Reid for a header into the box, and Ryan Okerayi finished the chance with his second goal of the season to give HCU the 1-0 lead.

Senior goalkeeper Chema Preciado kept Gonzaga within reach, making four saves on the night. Offensively, Alex Bazia led the Bulldogs with three shots on goal, while Drew Pedersen and Robbie Mora each added quality chances.

The Bulldogs finished with 45 percent of the possession and matched the Huskies with four saves. Gonzaga's backline, anchored by Farhan Moustafa, Damoni McKenna-Greenawalt, and Terry Watson, held strong for much of the contest before the late tally decided the match.

With the result, Gonzaga moves to 1-2-1 on the season, while Houston Christian improves to 2-1-0.

The Bulldogs return home to play Oregon Tech on Friday, Sept. 12.
