MORAGA, Calif. – Saint Mary's scored the game-winning goal with 27 seconds left in regulation to defeat Gonzaga women's soccer, 1-0, Thursday. The Gaels won their sixth straight contest in the West Coast Conference opener for both teams.
The Gaels (6-1-1, 1-0-0 West Coast Conference) have not allowed a goal in their six-game win streak and entered the match with the best record in the WCC through non-conference play.
After a scoreless first 89 minutes, Brooklyn Smith struck a shot into the top corner of the net to break the stalemate. Her third goal of the season came off Sydney Middaugh's second assist of the year.
Saint Mary's had a 13-12 edge in shots, but Gonzaga (2-7-0, 0-1-0 WCC) had a 5-3 advantage in shots on goal. The Zags forced the Gaels' Kate Plachy into five saves, while
Michaela McCollum made two in the GU net. The Bulldogs took five of the nine corner kicks in the match. SMC held 53 percent of the possession in the match.
Saint Mary's outshot Gonzaga 7-1 in the first half, but the Zags were on the attack in the second half with an 11-6 advantage in shots. Nine Bulldogs took a shot in the match, with
Amelia Severn finishing with a team-high four, two of which were on frame.
After 22 days without a home match, GU returns to Luger Field to host unbeaten San Diego (3-0-4, 0-0-0) Saturday at 6 p.m. The game will be broadcast on ESPN Plus with live stats on GoZags.com.
