HONOLULU, Hawaii- Gonzaga Baseball (0-2) fell to Hawaii (2-0) for the second straight game after a late inning rally fell short on Saturday.
Hawaii jumped out to a lead to start the game in the bottom of the first when Erik Hoffberg hit two batters before allowing both runners to score. Hawaii then opened the second inning with back to back doubles, adding a third run. Hoffberg was able to work out of the jam with three straight outs. The Rainbow Warriors also scored an additional run after the leadoff hitter was also hit and then came around to score in the third inning.
The Zags were hard pressed to generate offense against UH starter Hekili Robello through the first six innings of his first Division 1 start. Robello threw seven strikeouts and allowed only four hits with no runs in his first six innings of work.
After working Robello's pitch count, the Zags got to him in the eighth, taking advantage of an error with back to back singles by Tommy Eisenstat and Noah Meffert to load the bases with no outs. This forced Hawaii to go to their bullpen, and their first reliever of the inning promptly walked Andy Cisneros for an RBI walk. Landon White added an RBI single, while Bo Shinkle's hard hit fielders choice into right field plated the third Zag run of the inning. Hawaii then brought in Saul Soto to limit the damage, with Soto forcing Mikey Bell to pop out on a foul ball to eliminate the threat.
Hawaii later added another run in the bottom of the eighth, taking advantage of yet another hit batter, this time Carson Boyer struck by on the first pitch of his collegiate debut. Soto remained in the game for Hawaii to close out the game, giving up only one baserunner across the final two innings.
The Zags will look to get the offense going as they go deeper into the Hawaii rotation and bullpen, with the next game set to start at 3pm Pacific Time on Sunday.
