SPOKANE, Wash. — Gonzaga University (20-8, 12-3 WCC) defeated Washington State University (5-23, 4-11 WCC) with a decisive 75-50 victory at the McCarthey Athletic Center. The Bulldogs dominated the boards with a 43-26 rebounding advantage and scored 32 points in the paint.
Ines Bettencourt led the scoring with 16 points, connecting on seven field goals, including two from beyond the arc.
Jaiden Haile contributed significantly with 13 points and dominated the boards with 11 rebounds.
Lauren Whittaker also finished with a double-double, scoring 14 points and collecting 11 rebounds.
Teryn Gardner added nine points, hitting three of four attempts from three-point range.
The Zags opened the quarter with consistent scoring, highlighted by Bettencourt's jumper at 8:59 to tie the game. Bettencourt continued to pace the Zags' offense, culminating in a layup by Haile at 4:25, extending the lead to 13–4. Despite Washington State's attempts to stay close, GU maintained control, ending the quarter ahead 17–8.
The Bulldogs extended their lead in the second quarter with a series of strategic scores, highlighted by a 3-pointer from Gardner at 4:25. Whittaker contributed significantly, securing offensive rebounds and converting them into points in the paint. Washington State made efforts to close the gap, but GU's efficient shooting from beyond the arc and strong rebounding maintained the advantage. The quarter concluded with GU leading 38–23.
GU maintained its momentum in the third quarter with a strong offensive performance, scoring 24 points and outpacing Washington State. Whittaker's layup at 8:54, followed by a free throw, set the tone early.
Allie Turner contributed significantly with a 3-pointer at 8:02 and a layup at 6:28, extending the lead.
Taylor Smith's assist to Gardner for a 3-pointer with 39 seconds remaining underscored the quarter's dominance. The quarter concluded with GU leading 62-41.
The Zags extended their lead decisively in the fourth quarter, with Bettencourt opening the scoring at 9:42 with a jumper in the paint. Gonzaga maintained control as Whittaker added two more points with a layup at 7:21, contributing to a series of effective plays in the paint. Haile further solidified the advantage by scoring a layup at 3:18, assisted by
Sierra Lichtie, to ensure the lead remained out of reach. The game concluded with GU victorious, securing a final score of 75-50.
Looking ahead, the Bulldogs will travel to Stockton, California, for a matchup against Pacific on Saturday, Feb. 21. The game will be held at the Spanos Center.
