Zags shut down Texas State's bats to take 5-1 win

SAN MARCOS, Texas- Gonzaga Baseball (2-4) rallied late to take a 5-1 win to even the series with Texas State (4-2) on Saturday afternoon.

The Zags limited the Bobcats to just three hits in the contest and held them scoreless for the final seven innings of the game. Gonzaga used a four run outburst in the seventh inning to take the lead before closing out the game.

Texas State struck first, scoring a run in the second inning thanks to a missed pick off move by Gonzaga that allowed Dawson Park to come home to open the scoring.

Beyond that inning, Erik Hoffberg had a phenomenal quality start for the Zags, going a full seven innings and not allowing any other runs. Hoffberg only gave up two hits and three walks while striking out seven Bobcat batters. He threw 64 of his 104 pitches on the afternoon for a strike. The Zags did not allow a Texas State batter to advance beyond second base after the second inning.

GU broke through in the seventh inning, as Luca DiPaolo continued his recent hitting streak by leading off the inning with a double. Walks to Hudson Shupe and Ricky Sanchez loaded the bases with just one out. Tommy Eisenstat tied the game with an RBI fielder's choice before Bo Shinkle drew another walk to load the bases again. Noah Meffert ripped a double to deep left center field, driving in all three runners and giving the Zags four runs in the inning.

The Zags drove in an insurance run in the eighth inning, with Bo Shinkle picking up a painful RBI as he was hit by a pitch to drive in a run after the Zags loaded the bases thanks to another previous hit batter. Freshman right hander Landon Hood continued his streak of scoreless innings by closing out the final two innings, holding the Bobcats to just one hit while striking out two batters to preserve the win.

Gonzaga only used two pitchers today while Texas State was forced to use seven arms. The Zags will hope to use their pitching depth and their newfound batting momentum to take the series finale. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+ and is scheduled for 11 am pacific time on Sunday
