SAN MARCOS, Texas- Gonzaga Baseball (2-5) was shut out by Texas State (5-2) on Sunday while dropping the series finale with a 5-0 score.
Gonzaga only had four hits on the day, while Texas State ended the afternoon with more runs than hits, taking advantage of seven walks and a hit batter to score their runs. Two of Gonzaga's four hits came from Mikey Bell, his second game of the series with multiple hits. Gonzaga was not able to advance a runner beyond second base after the first inning.
Texas State led off the scoring with a solo home run from Jackson Cotton in the third inning. Karsten Sweum gave up three hits and three walks in the fourth inning, allowing the Bobcats to piece together three more runs. They added an extra run in the sixth, scoring on a very unconventional play on a ball that dropped in right field but resulted in the Zags turning a double play at first and second base but allowing the runner to score from third.
The Zags were shut down by Texas State starter Jesus Tovar, who went for eight scoreless innings on 100 pitches. He only gave up one walk in addition to the three hits. Tovar still has a 0.00 ERA on the season after his outing on Sunday.
Gonzaga will look to reset before taking on a ranked test next weekend, playing a three game series at #21 Oklahoma. All three games will be available through SEC Network+, with the first game scheduled for a 2pm pacific time start on Friday.
