Zag Baseball secures 7-1 win over #13 Oklahoma

NORMAN, Oklahoma- Gonzaga Baseball (3-7) picked up their first ranked win of the season, upsetting #13 Oklahoma (10-2) by a score of 7-1 on Sunday thanks to a fantastic pitching performance.

Oklahoma only picked up three hits on the night, with the Sooners only getting a single hit in the first five innings. Karsten Sweum was lights out for the Zags in his start, going six innings with only one run and three hits while striking out seven batters. Landon Hood came out of the bullpen and struck out another seven Oklahoma batters while not allowing a single hit en route to locking down the save.

The Zags scored the first runs in the game thanks to a two run homer by Mikey Bell in the third inning. Sweum tossed three straight innings without allowing a baserunner, keeping Oklahoma off the basepaths from the third through fifth innings to preserve the GU lead.

Oklahoma got one run back in the sixth inning thanks to a solo home run, the lone blemish on a lockdown afternoon for the Gonzaga pitching staff. Sweum had retired 12 straight batters before he allowed that run, and he responded to the run by immediately inducing a flyout to end the inning and any other chances for OU scoring on the day.

The Zags blew open the game in the top of the ninth inning, as a single by Hudson Shupe loaded the bases with no outs. A sacrifice fly followed by a single by Bo Shinkle then added two runs before Rece Schuerman ripped a double to left center field to score another two runs. Schuerman came around to score two batters later thanks to a misplay by the Oklahoma outfield on a fly ball.

Hood continued to impress in his freshman season, securing in the save with a three inning appearance from the bullpen. He held Oklahoma hitless for three innings, striking out a remarkable seven Sooners while facing just eleven batters. The Zags held Oklahoma to their lowest number of runs and hits in a game in 2026.

Gonzaga will look to continue to build off this win as they continue this long road stretch, traveling to Omaha to take on Creighton next weekend. First pitch is scheduled for 4pm pacific time on Friday.
