TERRE HAUTE, Indiana- Gonzaga Baseball (5-11) picked up a win over Indiana State (7-10) on Friday thanks to a season high three home runs and a great start from Erik Hoffberg.
The Zags led off the game with a run in the top of the first, with Bo Shinkle stealing a base before coming around to score on an error in the outfield. This was the first time this season that Gonzaga has scored in the first inning. Shinkle then hit an RBI single in the top of the second inning to give the Zags an early lead. Shinkle ended the game with two stolen bases, a season high in a single game for a Zag.
Gonzaga broke the game open in the top of the fourth inning, with Ricky Sanchez and Hudson Shupe hitting back to back home runs to extend the lead. After two more hits, Noah Meffert hit the third home run of the inning to left center field to add another three runs. Indiana State got a run from a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the inning before they added another run in the bottom of the sixth via a double.
Erik Hoffberg threw seven innings today, matching a career high for innings pitched. He only gave up two runs and struck out seven Sycamore batters, tying his career best for punchouts in a game. His long outing, which included a career high 116 pitches (65 of which were strikes), allowed the Zags to use only one reliver to save the bullpen for the rest of the series.
Things got tricky in the eighth, but Garrett Gores got out of a bases loaded jam with a fly ball to hold Indiana State scoreless in the inning. ISU got a two run home run in the bottom of the ninth to improve the final score, but the Zags closed out the game without any more damage to lock in the win. This is the seventh game in a row that Gonzaga has had more hits than their opponent.
Gonzaga will take on Indiana State for a second time tomorrow, with first pitch set for 11 am pacific time.
