SAN DIEGO- Gonzaga Baseball (9-12) picked up another win over San Diego (8-14) with a late home run, capping a comeback win with a 11-6 victory.
The Zags entered the eighth inning trailing 6-5 before Mikey Bell doubled and was driven in on a single to tie the score. After a walk put two runners on base, Hudson Shupe stepped up and drilled a home run to deep right field to score three runs for the Zags. The Zags scored two more runs in the top of the ninth inning to solidify their second late inning comeback via the longball in as many days.
Gonzaga had a season high 19 hits in the game, with six Zags having a multi-hit game. Maddox Haley finished the game with four hits, going .583 (7 for 12) over the weekend. Shupe led the Zags with a career high five RBIs, while Bell scored three runs and drew a career high three walks in the contest.
San Diego scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the first on a fielding error, but the Zags responded by scoring runs in the second through fourth innings. GU plated a run in the second and third innings on infield hits. They then added three runs in the fourth inning, taking advantage of a pair of doubles from Rece Schuerman and Ryder Young.
San Diego leveraged two stolen bases in the fifth inning to score a pair of runs. Starter Karsten Sweum only allowed USD to score two earned runs in his five innings of work, striking out seven batters across 97 pitches.
San Diego took the lead in the seventh inning, using three straight singles to add another two runs before using a squeeze play to take the lead. The lead wouldn't last, as Shupe then stepped up to hit the home run that gave GU the lead and eventual win. Zach Bowman locked down the last three frames of the game to lock in his first win of the season. Bowman gave up no runs across three innings, allowing only three baserunners and securing the final nine outs of the win.
This win put Gonzaga in great position to start conference play, with GU taking the series win over the only team that was picked ahead of them in the WCC preseason poll.
Gonzaga is set to have their first home game of the year on Tuesday, taking on Washington State at 6pm at Patterson Baseball Complex.
