Gonzaga routs Gaels in 14-4 run rule to continue winning ways

MORAGA, Calif.- Gonzaga Baseball (22-14, 11-3 WCC) continued their hot streak with a 14-4 win over Saint Mary's (22-16, 8-6 WCC).

Gonzaga has won nine games in a row, the second longest active win streak in Division 1 baseball. The Zags are currently in first place in the WCC with eleven wins. This matchup resulted in the Zags forcing the Gaels to give up a season high in runs while ending the game early on the run rule.

GU opened the game with the first three batters getting on base, taking advantage of a single and two walks to load the bases. A ground ball and a sacrifice fly scored two runs to give Gonzaga the lead in the first frame. Gonzaga is still undefeated in games in which they score in the first inning this year, going 9-0 in such cases.

Karsten Sweum struck out three batters in the first inning. Sweum had a great start, throwing for 6.1 innings and seven strikeouts across 101 pitches.

The Zags got the leadoff batter on in six of the eight innings, chasing the Saint Mary's starter from the game in just the second inning. Gonzaga scored four runs in the fourth inning, with Ricky Sanchez driving in Hudson Shupe and Landon White on a single. Back to back hits from Mikey Bell and Ryder Young then combined to score Sanchez and Bell to extend the lead to six to one. Saint Mary's hit a solo shot in the bottom of the inning to cut into the deficit.

Gonzaga scored another run in the fifth after once again loading the bases. The Zags then tacked on another three runs thanks to a home run to right field by Hudson Shupe in the sixth inning. The Gaels scored a run in each of the following two innings before the Bulldogs ended the game early with another scoring outburst in the eighth.

Maddox Haley opened the eighth with a double, moving to third on a single by Noah Meffert. The Zags then had a terrific double steal, with Meffert taking second and forcing a throw, allowing Haley to steal home. Three straight singles kept the basepaths moving as Gonzaga pushed the lead to double digits to force the early end with the run rule.

Gonzaga will look to capture a series sweep at Saint Mary's on Sunday. First pitch for the final game of the series is 1pm.
